peugeot 405 td clutch adjuster - dick_trident
Hello, I have a peugeot 405 td with no adjustment left on the cable. It has no adjuster so assume it is the later model with the automatic adjuster. Does the lack of free play suggest a worn out clutch or a problem with the adjuster? Where is the adjuster? It sounds like a tricky job whatever is wrong with it. It has done about 190000 miles. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

The auto clutch cable adjuster was fitted around mid 1994, Its part of the clutch cable, which cost about £30 ish from a Pug dealer.

The cable is fairly easy to change too.

some late 405,s have a adjustable clutch cable, most early models just have a cable with no room for adjustment on the td,if clutch is playing up ,it probably needs a clutch, you can get one for 68 quid or a bit less(i know i just got one last month),the reason im saying get a new clutch is because of the way its designed in the 405 ,theres not much else that can go wrong cep your clutch clip....gearbox diff matter lol...email me on jonkaz841@msn if you want the address of the cheap clutch place if ya live near croydon...p.s. certain clutch place called mister something(wink wink )do a 405 for 230 quid which is cheap and good price as main dealers charge 400 quid plus v.a.t and oil seals and oil and tissue n paper towels and gloves etc etc

Thanks for all the advice. It was as I thought by the sounds of it. Unfortunately I live in Lincolnshire so the Croydon connection is not much use but thanks anyway. Decisions now as to whether or not the car is worth repairing. Ho hum.
Cheers.

Final follow up.
Thanks to LeePower and pienmash for suggestions. Finally got under the car and found the auto adjuster. I think the problem was that the clutch had overheated due to some tricky towing and expanded and allowed the adjuster to take up slack which meant that it was too tight when cool. Got round the problem by disengaging the clutch and holding it disengaged with a screwdriver on the arm, let the clutch pedal up, it is then possible to pull the inner right out. Release the clutch arm, then allow the inner cable back into position. Voila, clutch has free play again and doesn't slip (at the moment).
I gather the same system is used on the Xantia so info might come in useful, who knows.
Thanks again.
