Alternators have been standard on cars for 20 or so years and IIRC 'sealed for life batteries' nearly as long.

Even after their introduction it seemed that a replacement battery was required every 3 or 4 years. However over the last decade it would appear that they have improved their longevity considerably. I did a straw poll amongst friends and nobody has had to replace a duff battery recently; some cars over 8 years old still have their original batteries fitted.

As far as I am aware battery technology has not changed so why the dramatic improvement in reliability? Or has reliability not improved?

My last brand new battery died a sudden and tragic death after just 30 months (and I 'look after' my batteries)

Fortunately, it had a 36 month guarantee....

I replaced the battery on my old Nissan when it was seven years old... just as a precaution when I managed to source a cheap one.

My current BMW is 13 years old, and as far as I know on its first battery. It claims it needs replacing (there's a little warning light thingy) but the car always starts fine. Sometimes it struggles to close a couple of windows and the sunroof at the same time. Probably I ought to think about replacing it.

Recently installed a new battery for a friend. It was for a 1990 Mercedes and had the original battery (date coded late '89).

I would agree that changing a battery after 7 years is wise, even if it seems to be functioning ok
My experience of a dying battery is not just about failure to start in the morning.
I experienced odd behaviours with multiple dash warning lights suddenly appearing, which proved very inconvenient. New battery solved this at a stroke
There are so many vehicle gizmos that need tip top battery use these days. Don’t muck about -get a new one.

After 20 years ! Wow !

Not doing your charging system any favors

Perhaps it's where I live but I seldom get more than 4 years out of a battery. One day it's fine, next morning you stick the key in and get that dreaded churning-cum-ticking noise.....My bike though is coming up to its 5th with the aid of a battery tender.

I always replace the battery at four and a half years (with a Halfords one). I reckon it is not worth the risk to try squeezing any more out of one. But that's me.

I’m totally with you there-wonder why battery replacement every 4 years isn’t a service recomendation?

Batteries in our cars have been Yuasa from new. Average age before dying ? 10 years and a bit

Replaced with ..Yuasa.

(Honda and Toyota)

Buy German , get r****** is my experience.

Battery in our recently PX'd Skoda Fabia was 6 years old when we sold it, never had an issue with it and it was almost certainly German.

Battery in the Caterham was fitted June 2017 and still shows 12.8 volts after standing a week. Went out in it today and will only replace when the weekly voltage drop increases. For the record its a Yuasa 5000 series (pretty sure its a 063) which comes with a 5 year guarantee so why would anyone replace one after 4 years, madness.

Strange thread resurrection.

Possibly resurrected by a spammer that has now been deleted.

I also have a Yuasa 5000 in the old Focus, I think I bought it four years ago. No problems so far and the car often sits for three weeks without being used.

Because many batteries last a lot longer, some quite a bit less, and it is an easy item to replace at short notice when it becomes necessary.

What other car parts would you recommend changing on a fixed schedule ?

"I always replace the battery at four and a half years (with a Halfords one). I reckon it is not worth the risk to try squeezing any more out of one. But that's me."

Quite. People must do as they see fit. However, I can't see the point of unnecessary expenditure. It's clear from this thread that many batteries last for a long time. Usually you get plenty of warning before they fail completely.

My Mazda is a 14 plate and still has the original battery. It lives outside. Every winter for the last few years I've expected it not to start on some frosty morning, but it keeps going. I'll replace it as soon as it fails - either to start the car, or the stop-start fails - a sign the battery is not holding its charge. If the car suddenly fails to start I'll suck up the consequences - cadging a lift, taking the bus, paying for a taxi or whatever. I will still have saved quite a bit of money.

Our Berlingo is still on the original battery at nearly 11 years and 130k miles.

The Fabia's was replaced when it gave up the ghost after the pandemic at which time the car was around 4 years. I don't think standing pretty well unused during lockdown did it any favours and the car has stop/start which places further demands on the battery.

My husband got a Halfords battery for our Honda Civic which has stop/start. It's less than two years old and he has already had to return it once, but then again he knows very little about cars and batteries.... same as me and newer type petrol engines!

Maybe we should get a Yuasa battery. Must look into this. Want the Civic to last us a good bit longer yet as only 90+K on the clock.
