VW - Cost of Radio Aerials - Mr Moo
Our VW Beetle came with the stubby screw in radio aerial, mounted at the rear of the roof, just before the tailgate. Some light fingered individual nicked it the other night, thereby making Radio 2 rather crackly! VW quoted c. £18 inc. VAT for a replacement! On looking at a new Renault Clio and Megane, I noticed that the aerial on these vehicles looked very similar. The local Renault agent supplied the part for £7 inc. VAT and it's identical to the Vee Dub item!! Radio 2 now sounds as good as ever (!) and I've saved £11.

Cheers

That's handy to know!

Unusual though - the era of snapping off or pinching car radio aerials seemed to have died the death a long time ago.

Perhaps the thief had been to the same VW dealership prior to the crime...?

I had the aerial on my Passat Estate nicked at Bristol Airport long term car park not long ago.

Didn't notice when I got back to the car after landing late one evening in the dark. Had I noticed I might have searched for another VW to cannibalise!

Wish I'd known about their interchangeability with Renaults. >> That's handy to know!

I'm sorry, it hasn't. Mine was snapped off about 2 months ago. I was cross, I'd only recently replaced it after my kids had snapped it off accidentally, and it's still quite an annoying job.. but I'll have to do it again.

VW aerials are also interchangeable with Vauxhall aerials. Don't know the price though.

I presume you mean the telescopic type mounted on the edge of the front wing - not the bee-sting variety?

Some years ago it was the "fashion" for vandels to snap these off and for owners to often use a wire coathanger as a replacement; then gradually the annoying vandalism died the death.

I owned a Jetta from 1995-2003 with such an aerial mounted on the nearside front wing that was never interfered with, even though it was always erected to its maximum height.
