VW Golf mk2 driver,1989-I have been told that a possible cause for the carb icing symptoms I get in winter could be a problem with the inlet manifold heater,or throttle body heater;any advice on how to find, and check if these components are working correctly would be much appreciated;in simple terms please,Im only a novice mechanic!

AFAIK the manifold heater is only used for a few seconds at start up, not constantly. I had the same problem on an '84 Polo and it was because the ait intake was still taking cold air and not hot air from around the exhaust manifold. There was a lever on the inlet pipe to re-direct where the air came from, but the actual pipe to the exhaust manifold had gone west.
