I recently purchased a S reg rover 400 with only one alarm/immobiliser key.
I have seen many Rover fobs advertised on Ebay with the description saying they are easy to re-programme at your Rover dealer, for around £15, does any one know if this is true and will it work for previously used keys that are offered, as well as brand new unprogrammed units.

You can programme it yourself as you will have to reprogramme the fob every time you change the batteries. Email me for details.

That was my understanding too. I know you can resync them to the car easily when you change the battery, but I was under the impression that programming one from a different car was a dealer-only job.

The alarm ECU (Lucas 5AS) needs to be put into Learn mode - this can only be done with specialist equipment.

I have decided to buy a second hand key fob, they are around £10 on eBay, then take it to my local Rover dealer and see if he will code it for me.
I will let you know it it works or not.

Make sure you say battery wasnt replaced fast enough.I think time allowed is between 20-30 seconds.after that they need recoding by rover.I cant be certain of price so wont speculate.but beware it may not work.it may cost a fortune to get a replacement.but may cost price of fob and recoding to find it wont work.I may be wrong hope I am.good luck
