Population Bolton 260,000.

Car ownership, say 50% (aren't there 25m cars in Britain for 50m of us?), so 130,000 cars. Say there are 5 cars with this equipment. It's not going to stop me pinching cars!

I didn't know you pinched cars MM, I thought you drew maps...

Oh, you know. It's a challenging job, but it has it's moments.

Yes, but I don't think car thieves take one car and then stop, mapmaker.

Nice to see technology beiong used to help the average motorist for a change

It'll only make a difference if they pinch a sufficiently material number of cars that their chances of being nicked are high enoungh to be worth worrying about. Say about 100,000.

The Police know who nicks the cars, its the fact that when arrested the courts don't lock them up or don't lock them up for very long.

According to many people prison doesn't work (mostly left wing), if it keeps criminals off the street then it works perfectly.

And perhaps one day this equipment will be fitted to all new cars as standard equipment - but no doubt by then the thieves will have cracked how to get round it

Can I be a cynic and suggest that this may only be a "threat" to try and deter any would be thieves.

Once I hear of the first court case involving this then I will eat my words. Talking of courts, consider the following 2 options

1. Police know of suspected car thieves and they monitor and observe them as they steal cars over a course of several weeks to build up a picture, try and trace where the cars are going to etc etc and hopefully get a good conviction at the end of it

or

2. They fill a car with loads of hi tech equipment that will enable them to convict the person who is stealing the car with the theft of that one vehicle! Would the judge even give community service for the theft of one car?

Not a threat it certainly exists in Medway. Used to know a special and he was tasked with parking it up on occasions. Normally put in places where tealeaves frequent such as Hospital car parks.

Depends which ones you are after. Accepted that it wil not help catch joyriders. The serious professionals, however, can achieve a pretty high turnover so are subject to a much higher risk.

There is also the deterrent effect, which is no doubt why it is being reported in the media.

Saw this on one of those police action type shows out of New Zealand I think. It made for interesting viewing if nothing else. Seeing how quickly the car was stolen, how it was treated when driven (not very well as you can imagine) and where the thieves took it (right back to their home/base).

As was mentioned, if the thieves won't get done for theft, (or "taking" *sigh*) and if they do, it won't be much of a punishment then why bother?...unless the footage will be sold on to various TV production companies for a nice tidy profit 8-).

If I remember correctly, some time ago one of the Police Forces used a Sierra Cosworth as a bait car and staked it out.

It still got nicked & they never found it! :-O

I seem to remember they tried this in Liverpool years ago, but were forced to stop. I cannot recall the reason why now, but I think it was something to do with the fact it was all a bit dodgy legally because they were deemed as encouraging people to commit a crime and then nicking them for it (or something like that)

This sounds a good idea to me. However I understand that this can be construed as entrapment and in the past this has got people off when up at court.

I'm sure I read about an immobilisor that can be activated by text message, switching off the engine and then deadlocking the doors and windows... trapping the theif inside.

Sadly, doesn't release nerve gas into the cabin, but we can always hope!
