Mazda 323. If the bodywork's OK, the mechanics almost certainly will be.

Should almost be possible to pick up a post 96 one (having looked in the carbycar breakdown) at that price. There don't seem to be a lot around - or are there just not many for sale?

Insurance group 9-14 - sounds a bit pricey to me...

That was the obvious answer!

earlier I found a marvellous thread on first cars, well worth a read for anybody who is bored. www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=2419&v...f

Intriguingly, for the sorts of sums of money they talk about, you can still buy a Mk II Polo that is in much better state & much more roadworthy than the cars mentioned there.

Hyundai accent mark 1, 1198 - can easily pick one up for around 700 pound. mechanically superb, check for rusty brackets and screws under engine.
very durable, will run for along time.
Nice drive, adequate space, decent performance and competitive band 3/4 insurance.

In the same boat 7 years ago we got my daughter a Volvo 340. Lasted her 2 years without major hassle till she saved some cash for a newer one and the insurance wasn't bad either. Would suggest a 440 which would if chosen carefully would do the job well.

Have a look though the local papers to find cars that are small and in the price range.

Then the key to bying cars in this price range is the condition. They;ve lost most of their value for a good reason. Just find soemthing that looks like its been cared for, is cheap to ensure and has an acceptable image.

My daughter loved her L reg Clio - to the extent that when she got a good job and pay rise she replaced it with a new Clio in April. Was very reliable except for a new starter and rear brake cylinders neither of which cost much to replace. Had over 100k on the clock when she sold it.
And before you say it, yes I know it's a Renault and how unreliable they are - except hers was a Renault and wasn't unreliable!!
Son still has a K reg one with 110k on it - had a new water pump and that's about it, but watch for rust around off side rear wheel arch on many four doors.

Spikeyhead: Then the key to bying cars in this price range is the condition. They;ve lost most of their value for a good reason.

No! :) They've lost most of their value because punters don't like second hand cars; cars over 5 years old; cars over 60k - or worse still 100k.

That's why they're a bargain!

>>Just find soemthing that ... is cheap to insure and has an acceptable image.

That was my question.

"worse still 100k"

Absolutely! There remains a widespread misconception (aided and abetted by the 'low-mileage' ads) that engines don't last any longer. Still, it works to your (and my) advantage in this situation - it never fails to amaze me how much car you can buy for a few hundred pounds, just as long as you're not a fashion victim.
First car under £1000 - Mapmaker
& even if you are a fashion victim.

A virtual friend has been let down twice on ebay for this motor - a W123 230TE which is probably £500 away from being a 2k car.

tinyurl.com/2rmoc He's put a lot of effort into this - anybody interested. For £31!!! And still they won't take it away.
First car under £1000 - J Bonington Jagworth
Yes, but..

"a few things left to do such as finish the welding on the o/s inner wing top and sort out an intermittent starting problem"

I'm all for cheap motors, but I do like them to start! If these really are trivial items, why doesn't he sort them?

How about a S'H'koda?

Cheaper to buy/run than a VW and dealers are supposed to be better too (I get it serviced via our local indy)!

Very happy with Mrs V's Felica although it could do with power steering.

OOOhhh, exciting! Couple of questions please:

Age - year and reg? Last cambelt change? How many previous? Reason for sale? Cost? Is mileage genuine (and how do you know?) And where is it - is that a Bristol number? And which 1.9d is it - (what's it's name - that can make 5 insurance groups' difference).

Thanks!

(Not certain she wants a car quite yet, so no promises.)
First car under £1000 - footy_72
It's a 1994 on an M plate. Last cambelt change was done around 80k (now on 90k). I'll have to check when i get home exactly when (definately within the last 18 months)

2 previous owners (1st owner for 1 year, then an old man in windsor until may 02, and now my wife.)

We're selling both our cars, and getting a xsara vts coupe for SWMBO and a 1962 vw beetle for me. I have a long standing weakness for vintage veedubs!

Mileage is genuine - full stamped service history, all invoices / receipts, MOT's etc.

It's a 1.9d Provence (very low insurance group)

Bodywork is good, save for the odd shopping trolley dent!!

We're in Backwell, 1/2 way between Bristol and Weston Super Mare.

Fire away if you think of any other questions - sorry it took a while to get back to you - i was resigning from my job!!

Cheers,

Ian

Cannot find Provence on the abi website... Does any of these ring a bell?

ZX Avantage Diesel group 7
ZX Volcane TD group 10
ZX Reflex Diesel group 7

I'll ask her if she's interested.

Thanks
First car under £1000 - footy_72
It's a special edition (although who knows what's special about it over and above the reflex model!).

i'm looking around on the net for details of the provence, but insurance co's have always found it when i've asked for quotes!!

Found this on www.carsource.co.uk

Limited Editions Model Introduced Based On
Reflex Plus 93K Reflex
Pzazz 93K Reflex (Petrol & Diesel)
Neon 94L Reflex
Provence 94L Reflex (Petrol & Diesel)
Dimension 94M Reflex (Petrol & Diesel)Elation 95M Reflex (Petrol & Diesel)

Dead special then! :)

How little do you want for it? I see a '92 one with 4 months tax & 5 months test went on ebay last week for £110.

First car under £1000 - footy_72
a born haggler!

i was thinking of nearer the thousand pounds!
First car under £1000 - Mapmaker
With the tax, that one on eBay was virtually free - it did need a new door lock.

Here's another ebay one, which sold the moment I saw it for £411. 50k, '92 K reg. If only I'd seen it earlier, might have had it.

tinyurl.com/2zxha

I'd have thought £400 would be nearer the mark, plus whatever the tax & an adjustment if there's diesel in the tank.

Just visit Mike Brewer's site for a valuation of your car at £110.

www.wheelerdealer.com/capvalue.asp

Private sales really aren't worth 10 times the trade value!

Mike Brewer is telling me £930

I'd take that.

OK, so I've got the wrong car:

Citroen/zx diesel hatchback/1.9D Diesel 3 door/1994/Average/1994M/90,000.

Even putting it in at 'retail standard' which probably no car of that age can achieve (shopping trolley dents etc.) it only comes in at 883.

What car are you looking at?

Cheers!
First car under £1000 - footy_72
Select Citroen / ZX Hatchback Special Editions / 1.9d Provence 3dr / Condition Clean (I will wash it!) / 94 M / 90k miles

£930.

At least it hasn't depreciated any more since early this morning!!

Average would give £665, which i think would be very harsh, bearing in mind it's condition, service history, etc.
First car under £1000 - Mapmaker
>>It's a special edition (although who knows what's special about it over and above the reflex model!).

Well, a six-fold increase in value seems to be the answer.

So, what are the extras that make it worth an extra 800 than the 'non-Provence' one which comes in at £150 clean.

Sounds as though you've got a rther expensive special edition there which is going to make selling it (to a miserable git like me) rather tricky!

Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I've just used that link for my car. Can anyone tell me what it means by 'CAP value'?
First car under £1000 - trancer
And while they are at it, tell me what "retail standard" means. I've just entered my car and the retail standard value is more than double the "clean" value.

I have seen some cars for sale at main dealers that I wouldn't even call "clean".
