Howdo,
We're preparing for a trip down to Cambridge on Friday, leaving the Liverpool area at 5.30pm. I know - must need my head testing.
Does anyone have any sneaky routes other than the M62/M6/A14(?) I was going to go?
I will of course be using the M6 Toll. I'm quite excited at the prospect. Now, I must get out more...
Cheers.

A50 would be the alternative, between M6 at Stoke & M1 at Leicester-ish.
Before the advent of the M6 toll, I used to think that the last 5/6 junctions of the M6 (which the toll does not circumnavigate) are not as enjoyable as the equivalent stretch of the M1.
Don't know how sticky Stoke will be by the time you get there at 6.30 if you decide to go A50; after that I think you'll find a pretty clear run. A14 will be fine, but watch for the Truvelo speed cameras on it; and the Gatso about 5 miles outside Cambridge.

Depending on exactly which way you're going and at what time, from the A50 to the M1 is a total nightmare for traffic and the M1 to the A14 can be pretty horrible as well.
