Hi teabelly,
I did try Liverpool Victoria this morning but (an di know I can't bring the site into disrepute) I won't be going with them put it that way.
I understand what you are saying about Dad's car. In fact, before I got my car, I was named on my Dad's but even then that was around 800 quid which to be honest, considering I'd be driving it perhaps once a month, isn't really worth it.
If I wrapped my car around a tree now, I wouldn't claim. Simply because, the cost of a new car is probably cheaper than the rise in insurance I would see.* Obviously if I hit someone else then it would be a different matter. On a final note, I know someone at Uni who has crashed their car 5 times. How long have they been driving? 4 months. Some have been minor scrapes. One has been ripping the bumper off the brand new Corsa SXI and a claim for whiplash. What did she crash into? A Cayenne. Oh dear.
Cheers and thanks for your reply,
Adam
* Before anyone spots the deliberate mistake, if I wrapped the car around a tree today obviously I wouldn't claim as it's only covered third party. :-)

>>I know someone at Uni who has crashed their car 5 times.......
And now you know why they give you such high quotes for your insurance.
|
Oh yes..so my Mum keeps telling me!
The person in question's recent crash into the Porsche, I have to admit, whilst stupid (she was pulling out of Uni) certainly in no way could have given the Porsche driver whiplash; they're just trying to claim more money. Although the front bumper was written off the corsa, the Porsche only had a scratch on the driver's door, no dents....miraculous! Still, I suppose if you go driving around in a Panzer Tank, not much is going to damage it.
And as we broach the 4X4 issue, I'll skulk off....
Thanks

Going through the same myself. 2 years ago I was with e-sure paying £320 per year. Had a claim and the renewal from e-sure went to £680!! Went to Frizzell and it dropped to £430. Just received renewal and Frizzell is now £417, done a quote on e-sure for old times sake and its £367!! Confused.com is useless saying e-sure wouldn't quote based on the info I gave which was the same as I gave on the e-sure website! Calling to Frizzell tonight to see if they will match e-sure, if not I'll be back with them.

Note the word 'she' has crashed five times...... As the father of a nineteen year old daughter who has recently written off my wife's new(ish) car after only 3 months driving. It seems that teenage women drivers are the worst offenders!! How she will get cover this September when our current policy expires will be interesting to say the least!

I'm not surprised. I'm a great proponent of Frizzell/Liverpool Victoria but I learnt many years (27 or more!) ago they don't like drivers under 25 year old. If you try them again in 7 years' time, you'll get a VERY competitive quote.

Adam,
I'm just 22 and drive a group 13 BMW. I have five year's no-claims, started off in a 1988 1.0 Polo (gp 3 paid 600 pounds TPFT own policy), then a 1996 306 non-turbo diesel (gp 4 480 pounds TPFT(!) own policy) and bought the BMW nearly two years ago.
I now pay just under 600 pounds (still TPFT)with a company called Prestige Insurance (Allen and Allen Group)who are very good and will match almost any offer. Adrian Flux can also be good for young chaps like you and I but Prestige are always very helpful/friednly and, above all, not at all condescending. I will stay with them until someone beats their quote by a decent margin.
If I wrote my car off into a ditch at this age I wouldn't claim even if I were fully comp - simply not worth losing the No Claims Bonus! Does anyone know when I can start protecting the NCB and how?
Happy hunting!

Matt, try an online quote with MoreThan to see if they'll give protected. I think they might - can't remember if it was 5 or 7 years they mentioned. I got it last year when I shifted to them from DirectLine - no extra charge for protected. - found the info - tagged onto bottom.
The only way to save money is to get old ;-(
MX5, 3 points, garaged, ancient git, fully comp 125 quid. Hmmm renewal due in a few weeks - fingers crossed.

car insurance is bizzare in the extreme....
I had my GTV insured with company A they were consistantly £100 cheaper than all comers for 3 years
I couldn't afford to commute in it so I purchase a Punto to do my commute and approach company A they want an extra £150 to finish the existing policy and want to charge £250 MORE for teh punto than they ever charged for teh GTV.
It makes no sense at all.
|
That's why it's cheaper to not have any insurance and risk the £250 (or whatever) fine.
You can't get road tax if you don't have insurance so there's no point in bothering with an MoT either. Soon you'll have saved enough to get a set of big alloys and extra loud stereo. By the look of several cars I see, this is quite a popular scheme.
To pay for the uninsured drivers, all our premiums go up, making the vicious circle go around again nicely. The real reason of course is that insurance companies, like every other company, is there to make money. If their profits are down and the shareholders aren't happy they put their prices up. And we pay them (or don't - see first paragraph)

Makes perfect sense. At the moment you are a captive customer as if you cancel the policy you well get 2p and a washer back so £150 more is (I assume) a better deal than cancelling the polciy and getting a new one.
Come renewal time, the dance will start again, they may quote you £250 more but if you ring around and get a lower quote they will likely match it to keep the business.

They absolutely wouldn't budge on the quote even after I'd rung around.
The upshot was that after 3 years as a very satisfied customer they lost my business. The way they lost my business is bizzare, how can a punto cost more to insure than a GTV?
|
When my two offspring passed their tests I added them to my own comprehensive insurance - the cost was relatively small and, in time, both built up their own NCP after taking out car insurance.
My son has held the IAM badge for five years (he was under 30 when he passed the advanced test) and his insurance seems quite high to me but is based on his annual (high) mileage.
I used to have a 1.3 Jetta with a four-speed box which was rated as Group 7 and fully comprehensive insurance (some years ago now) was around £140; I then got the 1.6 Jetta TX which only has an additional 300cc, five-speed box and central locking and that's listed as Group 10..:-)
Now I have a 1.6 Bora SE and the cost of insuring it is approximately the same as for the TX as it's rated in Group 6.
Last year I paid £193 with DirectLine (in previous years this company had always proved the most expensive of all the quotes I used to get, but was the lowest this time round).
Using the Internet certainly pays dividends, but make sure you use reputable companies and ignore the online brokers; they are not there for your financial health.
One unusual story is that I used to be with AXA about four years ago and got a quote by phone that proved the best of the lot at the time and, with a £10 M and S voucher, even better.
The following year the premium went up so I decided to re-enter my details on its website. To my surprise the quote was about £15 lower and, this time, with another £10 voucher.
So I rang AXA up only to be informed it was not them personally, but their online branch and that it could not match the quote because the subsidiary operated with lower overheads..:-)
Not surprisingly I cancelled the about to expire AXA insurance, used the online quote and saved £25.

Ah the young male car insurance dilema! i'm 20 and drive a group 16 car. Until a few months ago I was a named driver on a policy in my dads name on my previous car so as a result i have no no claims. When i got my new car i tried pretty much every insurance company in britain and the company that came out cheapest by a long way was Elephant.co.uk. I payed them £1995 for a years insurance. My highest quote was £13500 from Endsleigh who are supposed to be a student speacialist! For the record a friend of mine who is just 20 has a BMW M3 conv and an Aston Martin Vanquish and his insurance bill is £25k a year!
|
And strangely enough, my daughter has used Endsleigh since she was a student because they were cheapest. My son, however found them v. expensive and has been with Direct Line for a few years - the cheapest for him. These are both for Clios. as someone said above - a quote for £13k just means they don't want your business
|
Well yes that's what i thought but a woman at the local endsleigh office obviously thought differently as she sent me a hand written letter the next day saying that they might be able to do a deal for cash!
|
Out of interest John is your friend an actor/footballer? - otherwise how on earth a 20 year old can afford 25k a year for insurance is beyond me!
|
Don't know which Uni John's at but I have friends at my Uni with a Evo 8, Boxter S, 350z, 911 GT3 and Several Imprezas. Not quite Vanquish league but hey! I have one friend with what he describes as a Golf TDi PD 150 DBI where the DBI stands for "Daddy Bought It". Enough said!
I must admit that my Dad has helped me out but then who can afford the insurance even on a fiesta at 17 years old? Will hopefully pay back the loan when I drive him around in the dusk of his life!
|
Just to add that the Uni friend of mine who gets the most girls drives a clapped out 1970s London Taxi. Quite right too!
|
No my friend is not a footballer or an actor. He started a business when we were at college that does ring tones, email, sms messaging and all that sort of stuff from the internet. Back then he was making about £200 a day while sitting at college. In the few years since we left college the company has taken off in a big way and he now has the cars, a big house and lots of holidays. He is still doing a degree though!
