Insurance - So damned expensive! - Adam {P}
Hi all,
It's that time of year again and I thought I'd moan on about insurance but I'm going to say something you may not believe.

Ok so I'm 18 years old and in the eyes of insurers (and perhaps many of you) am a "boy racer". I can assure you I'm not but understanably, the quotes I have been getting for insurance are going to be higher than normal but on some sites I feel like collapsing in a heap on the floor!

I'm not going to name any names obviously but for my first year of owning my own car and thus being insured on it was a round about £2000 for Third Party Only. Crazy I know but it has to be paid. Second year starts at the end of this month so with 1 years no claims under my belt, you'd expect a signicant drop. I've decided, if it is possible to get Fully Comp so I can occasionally drive my dad's car but I think the only way to find this out is by ringing them up. (I did post a thread about this a few days ago) The cheapest quote I've had is £1600 fully comp which believe it or not is actually very cheap compared to last year. However, brace yourselves, one quote I've had has been the princely sum of £7,800. Needless to say I'm not going with them!

My dad made a very good point though the other day. It is a legal requirement to have insurance. Many insurers will only insure 21 year olds. He made a really good argument which I forget now but his point was, in anything else, it would be extortion or somesuch seeing as you have to have it but the number of companies willing to insure you are so few and the ones you find charge you the earth.

Sorry for the long post it just gets my back up! IMO, 7 grand for a Fiesta is a joke. £1600 is a joke but at least it's cheaper than the first year!!!

Thanks for your patience,

Adam

Try liverpool victoria/frizzell they can be amazingly cheap.

Third party only seems to attract higher prices than fully comp sometimes as insurers assume you are a bad risk if you ask for TPO/TPFT. Very expensive quotes are just a sign you're not in the insurer's target market. Even with fully comp you will be unlikey to have the driving other cars extension due to your age. It would more sensible if your dad added you as a named driver on his policy. If you were driving his car on the d.o.c extension you'd only be insured for third party risks anyway, so if you bent it you'd be paying for it.

Hi teabelly,
I did try Liverpool Victoria this morning but (an di know I can't bring the site into disrepute) I won't be going with them put it that way.

I understand what you are saying about Dad's car. In fact, before I got my car, I was named on my Dad's but even then that was around 800 quid which to be honest, considering I'd be driving it perhaps once a month, isn't really worth it.

If I wrapped my car around a tree now, I wouldn't claim. Simply because, the cost of a new car is probably cheaper than the rise in insurance I would see.* Obviously if I hit someone else then it would be a different matter. On a final note, I know someone at Uni who has crashed their car 5 times. How long have they been driving? 4 months. Some have been minor scrapes. One has been ripping the bumper off the brand new Corsa SXI and a claim for whiplash. What did she crash into? A Cayenne. Oh dear.

Cheers and thanks for your reply,

Adam

* Before anyone spots the deliberate mistake, if I wrapped the car around a tree today obviously I wouldn't claim as it's only covered third party. :-)
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Mark (RLBS)
>>I know someone at Uni who has crashed their car 5 times.......

And now you know why they give you such high quotes for your insurance.
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Adam {P}
Oh yes..so my Mum keeps telling me!

The person in question's recent crash into the Porsche, I have to admit, whilst stupid (she was pulling out of Uni) certainly in no way could have given the Porsche driver whiplash; they're just trying to claim more money. Although the front bumper was written off the corsa, the Porsche only had a scratch on the driver's door, no dents....miraculous! Still, I suppose if you go driving around in a Panzer Tank, not much is going to damage it.

And as we broach the 4X4 issue, I'll skulk off....

Thanks

Going through the same myself. 2 years ago I was with e-sure paying £320 per year. Had a claim and the renewal from e-sure went to £680!! Went to Frizzell and it dropped to £430. Just received renewal and Frizzell is now £417, done a quote on e-sure for old times sake and its £367!! Confused.com is useless saying e-sure wouldn't quote based on the info I gave which was the same as I gave on the e-sure website! Calling to Frizzell tonight to see if they will match e-sure, if not I'll be back with them.

Note the word 'she' has crashed five times...... As the father of a nineteen year old daughter who has recently written off my wife's new(ish) car after only 3 months driving. It seems that teenage women drivers are the worst offenders!! How she will get cover this September when our current policy expires will be interesting to say the least!

Adam

I'm not surprised. I'm a great proponent of Frizzell/Liverpool Victoria but I learnt many years (27 or more!) ago they don't like drivers under 25 year old. If you try them again in 7 years' time, you'll get a VERY competitive quote.

Adam,

I'm just 22 and drive a group 13 BMW. I have five year's no-claims, started off in a 1988 1.0 Polo (gp 3 paid 600 pounds TPFT own policy), then a 1996 306 non-turbo diesel (gp 4 480 pounds TPFT(!) own policy) and bought the BMW nearly two years ago.

I now pay just under 600 pounds (still TPFT)with a company called Prestige Insurance (Allen and Allen Group)who are very good and will match almost any offer. Adrian Flux can also be good for young chaps like you and I but Prestige are always very helpful/friednly and, above all, not at all condescending. I will stay with them until someone beats their quote by a decent margin.

If I wrote my car off into a ditch at this age I wouldn't claim even if I were fully comp - simply not worth losing the No Claims Bonus! Does anyone know when I can start protecting the NCB and how?

Happy hunting!

Matt

Matt, try an online quote with MoreThan to see if they'll give protected. I think they might - can't remember if it was 5 or 7 years they mentioned. I got it last year when I shifted to them from DirectLine - no extra charge for protected. - found the info - tagged onto bottom.
The only way to save money is to get old ;-(
MX5, 3 points, garaged, ancient git, fully comp 125 quid. Hmmm renewal due in a few weeks - fingers crossed.

car insurance is bizzare in the extreme....

I had my GTV insured with company A they were consistantly £100 cheaper than all comers for 3 years
I couldn't afford to commute in it so I purchase a Punto to do my commute and approach company A they want an extra £150 to finish the existing policy and want to charge £250 MORE for teh punto than they ever charged for teh GTV.

It makes no sense at all.
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Garethj
That's why it's cheaper to not have any insurance and risk the £250 (or whatever) fine.

You can't get road tax if you don't have insurance so there's no point in bothering with an MoT either. Soon you'll have saved enough to get a set of big alloys and extra loud stereo. By the look of several cars I see, this is quite a popular scheme.

To pay for the uninsured drivers, all our premiums go up, making the vicious circle go around again nicely. The real reason of course is that insurance companies, like every other company, is there to make money. If their profits are down and the shareholders aren't happy they put their prices up. And we pay them (or don't - see first paragraph)

Gareth
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Thommo
Makes perfect sense. At the moment you are a captive customer as if you cancel the policy you well get 2p and a washer back so £150 more is (I assume) a better deal than cancelling the polciy and getting a new one.

Come renewal time, the dance will start again, they may quote you £250 more but if you ring around and get a lower quote they will likely match it to keep the business.

They absolutely wouldn't budge on the quote even after I'd rung around.
The upshot was that after 3 years as a very satisfied customer they lost my business. The way they lost my business is bizzare, how can a punto cost more to insure than a GTV?
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Stuartli
When my two offspring passed their tests I added them to my own comprehensive insurance - the cost was relatively small and, in time, both built up their own NCP after taking out car insurance.

My son has held the IAM badge for five years (he was under 30 when he passed the advanced test) and his insurance seems quite high to me but is based on his annual (high) mileage.

I used to have a 1.3 Jetta with a four-speed box which was rated as Group 7 and fully comprehensive insurance (some years ago now) was around £140; I then got the 1.6 Jetta TX which only has an additional 300cc, five-speed box and central locking and that's listed as Group 10..:-)

Now I have a 1.6 Bora SE and the cost of insuring it is approximately the same as for the TX as it's rated in Group 6.

Last year I paid £193 with DirectLine (in previous years this company had always proved the most expensive of all the quotes I used to get, but was the lowest this time round).

Using the Internet certainly pays dividends, but make sure you use reputable companies and ignore the online brokers; they are not there for your financial health.

One unusual story is that I used to be with AXA about four years ago and got a quote by phone that proved the best of the lot at the time and, with a £10 M and S voucher, even better.

The following year the premium went up so I decided to re-enter my details on its website. To my surprise the quote was about £15 lower and, this time, with another £10 voucher.

So I rang AXA up only to be informed it was not them personally, but their online branch and that it could not match the quote because the subsidiary operated with lower overheads..:-)

Not surprisingly I cancelled the about to expire AXA insurance, used the online quote and saved £25.

Ah the young male car insurance dilema! i'm 20 and drive a group 16 car. Until a few months ago I was a named driver on a policy in my dads name on my previous car so as a result i have no no claims. When i got my new car i tried pretty much every insurance company in britain and the company that came out cheapest by a long way was Elephant.co.uk. I payed them £1995 for a years insurance. My highest quote was £13500 from Endsleigh who are supposed to be a student speacialist! For the record a friend of mine who is just 20 has a BMW M3 conv and an Aston Martin Vanquish and his insurance bill is £25k a year!
Insurance - So damned expensive! - PhilW
And strangely enough, my daughter has used Endsleigh since she was a student because they were cheapest. My son, however found them v. expensive and has been with Direct Line for a few years - the cheapest for him. These are both for Clios. as someone said above - a quote for £13k just means they don't want your business
Insurance - So damned expensive! - John Basnett
Well yes that's what i thought but a woman at the local endsleigh office obviously thought differently as she sent me a hand written letter the next day saying that they might be able to do a deal for cash!
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Miller
Out of interest John is your friend an actor/footballer? - otherwise how on earth a 20 year old can afford 25k a year for insurance is beyond me!

Insurance - So damned expensive! - Matt
Don't know which Uni John's at but I have friends at my Uni with a Evo 8, Boxter S, 350z, 911 GT3 and Several Imprezas. Not quite Vanquish league but hey! I have one friend with what he describes as a Golf TDi PD 150 DBI where the DBI stands for "Daddy Bought It". Enough said!

I must admit that my Dad has helped me out but then who can afford the insurance even on a fiesta at 17 years old? Will hopefully pay back the loan when I drive him around in the dusk of his life!
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Matt
Just to add that the Uni friend of mine who gets the most girls drives a clapped out 1970s London Taxi. Quite right too!
Insurance - So damned expensive! - John Basnett
No my friend is not a footballer or an actor. He started a business when we were at college that does ring tones, email, sms messaging and all that sort of stuff from the internet. Back then he was making about £200 a day while sitting at college. In the few years since we left college the company has taken off in a big way and he now has the cars, a big house and lots of holidays. He is still doing a degree though!

Just be thankful you guys don't live in Ireland!!

I have just insured a brand new Nissan X-Trail 2.2 DCi SVe, which cost 37,000 Euro cash compared to (I think about) STG£19,500 in the UK, for a grand total of 1200 Euro (about STG£804).

I should perhaps mention that I am 34 Years old with 17 years no claims bonus living in a low crime rural area.

Behold the Irish Insurance market and weep!!!!!!

Adski. Beware many insurance companies comp policies do not cover the use of another vehicle until the policy holder is 21 years old and even then it is only at renewel. Regards Peter
Insurance - So damned expensive! - daveyjp
I've now matched the detail of the e-sure and Frizell quote and difference is down to voluntary excess. I've called Frizzell and increased my voluntary excess for accidental damage by £50 from (£200-250) and the premium has now dropped by £70.
Insurance - So damned expensive! - SR
Adski,

While I sympathise with your situation, I often wonder if people actually consider whether they really need a car if it's so prohibitively expensive in this situation - or at least the particular car they have. That would certainly be the response to comments about supposed extortion....

Anyway, respect to you for at least doing the decent thing and getting insurance....!
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Spunky
SR,

Male, Under 25, living in a city, no NCD... the type of car doesn't make that much of a difference. Ok Fiesta Vs Vanquish, but when the fiesta insurance is £2000 who cares if a vanquish is £20,000.
Insurance - So damned expensive! - SR
Spunky - if you read my post, you'll find I wasn't referring to Adski in particular, but the general point about people who hardly ever use their cars (e.g. due to "living in a city") but complain about the cost of insurance. Surely if it's that bad then public transport, taxis, even hiring a car occasionally would make more sense.

Insurance - So damned expensive! - OldPeculiar
How very strange, a £50 increase in excess leading to a £70 drop in premimum! How high will the excess go? Can you save even more?
Insurance - So damned expensive! - Spunky
My fully comp policy and that of most of my friends (we are nearly all sub 25)does not cover me to drive any over cars untill over 25. So it can be even worse than Peter D's helpful comment.

I have found Tesco very cheap... sorry... not as extortionate as the others. It hurt having my own policy at 1st but it is paying off now I have 3 years NCD (and my mates don't).
Insurance - So damned expensive! - daveyjp
Frizzell accidental damage excess goes up to £350.

Bit of an update. I I posted in another thread, I'm looking at a Focus or Mondeo as a next car. The odd thing is I was getting quotes of 1000 - 1100 quid; significantly lower than a Fiesta. However, these have risen over the last few days but I still think that 1300-1400 to insure a 2.0 Focus Ghia is pretty good; of course - for a normal, experienced driver it's terrible but for me it's good!

The most competitive ones so Far are Norwich Union and surprisingly enough, Liverpool Victoria should I get Fully Comp (which I have to given the value of the car).

I did try Churchill which was the most competitive until I put all the details in and was impressed. Of course, then you have to read the "Assumptions" - you have to be over 21. I found this highly annoying to be honest as it allowed me to put my date of birth in as 1985 and gave me a quote. How could I possibly be over 21!?!?

Anyway, anyone got any other ideas re insurance companies? I've found that some are plain silly but for a bigger car like a Focus, some have been quite reasonable. I've tried Tesco, Direct Line, Endsleigh, Liverpool Victoria and of course those lovable people at Churchill. I'll admit I'm struggling to thing of some mainstream ones. I can't see me improving on £1300 to be honest but we'll see.

Thanks very much for all of your help

Cheers

Adam...

Is there an insurance broker where you live who you could go into, sit down with and let them find you a cheaper quote? Don't know if I'm allowed to say this but I always use A Quote, based in Andover I think. They also deal over the phone so if you want the number I can find it for you.

When I first got Polo, I was 20 and wanted to switch from my clapped out Fiat Uno, and was getting quotes of anything up to £2000. Went to a broker and got it down to £650 fully comp. They have access to quotes from companies you can't contact yourself, who only deal with brokers.

Also by going through a broker they sorted out all the legal stuff when I was driven into last year and fought with my insurance company to get my no claims discount back, and I didn't really have to do any of it.

Forget the idea of driving other peoples' cars though. At your (our!) age that's going to add hundreds to your quotes.

Good luck!

Insurance - So damned expensive! - Adam {P}
PG,
if you could find the number I would be very grateful. Just before posting this, Endsleigh rang up (I only got an online quote this morning) and have basically undercut everyone. Now I'm on about 1250 which isn't really bad for a morning's work. Really friendly so at least I have 1250 to work to.

Would appreciate that number though,

Cheers

Hi...

A Quote: 0870 4446333 is the number I have, although the number given on the website (www.aquote.co.uk) is different.

I've just noticed you can do an online quote on the website now, but in your case it's probably still best to call them.

I'll apologise in advance if they quote you some stupid amount of money!

Good luck...

PG,
Just got a quote then and 2 quotes are from sites I've tried but are 3 grand (that's nearly 2 grand more). However, given your gleaming recommendation I am going to ring them.

Thanks again

Obviously different companies are better for different people, but here are some who I know have supplied competitive quotes to me or my friends in the past:

Bell direct
AXA
Natwest (although that might have been due to the discount for having home insurance with them)
Adrian Flux
Elephant
