Have just bought my wife a 2001 Y Focus - car absolutely great apart from the rear tyres (which are presumably the car's originals on 23k miles). They appear to have little cracks around the edge - don't know whether they have been run under-inflated. Should I insist on some recompense for a new pair of back tyres .... or should I swallow it and buy them myself?
Any advice would be greatfully received!

Could be due to lack of use, maybe it was in a field for 3 years?
As the tyre rotates, natural rubber resin leaches within the rubber, keeping it soft and elastic, if harsh chemicals are used to cosmetically dress the tyre, or its not used very often it can perish. What tyre are they out of interest, as 3 years is still not very long.

On some fwd cars the rears are given so little punishment that they never wear out - when they have to be replaced it's because they begin to perish. It sounds like that might be the case here.

The rear tyres are Continentals, which I have found to be fine in the past on my Mondeo. Is surprising that they are perishing after only 3 years ...... Have taken a photo (yes, I do have a life!) - would put it up somewhere if I knew how!

Hi HJ, no it is definitely the rubber. Wish I could show you the photo which I have here!

If they were visible on viewing the car prior to buying it, then you should have seen it.
I believe that if anything is obvious on a reasonable inspection before buying you can't complain about afterwards, but the rules may have changed.

Ask for them to be inspected by the tyre company's area representative - depending on the verdict you may get a new set (but somewhat unlikely in this case) or a fair discount on the replacements.

My fwd car failed its MOT at 4 years old with cracking in the rear tyres where the wall meets the tread. Original Continental tyres with 4mm of tread left. Average miles (50k) for age.
Car has been through 2 sets of front tyres in that time, it was half way through the second set when I bought the car and the new tyres had been put on the front rather than swapping them over.
cheers
