I have fresh water leaking into the front passenger footwell in my '98 Passat. It doesn't coincide with rainfall but appears sometimes days afterwards as a steady drip for, say, half a cupfull. As far as I can see the source is the doughnut shaped grey sponge to the right of the footwell. Can't see how it gets there.

Check your drains. Sunroof drains first (pour some water down them to see if they work). Then those in the engine bay (use your watering can).

Check the pollen filter cover, under the bonnet on the passenger side, if the cover is not on correctly water gets into the filter and eventually drips into the car.
Had it seviced lately by any chance ??

Serviced? No not lately! I'll check the filter, the car doesn't have a sunroof (sorry should have said)

Thanks for the advice, sadly the drain holes are clear, under the bonnet is dry, as is the pollen filter and the space it covers above the fan.
