Last year on 25th May I booked a crossing by Eurotunnel for the 27th May for a three day stay in France. It cost £59.
I have just tried to do the same again for next week and received a quote of £173. Tried P&O, Seafrance and Speedferries. Cheapest was Speedferries at £140.
I won't be going - think I'll buy some cheap Tesco wine and a couple of cigars instead.
How can they justify that price increase?
Daft thing is, I have booked for car and caravan in July/August for £126

Try messing about with the times of day. I was looking at speedferries for my father lat night, the original price was £140. By going (I think) out at 18:15 and back at 21:00 the price was cut to £50.
Of course, that might not be suitable for you, but thought I'd let you know.

BTW, he wants to take his van, a FIAT Ducato. Since there will only be 2 passengers, can this count as a car? Or will he have to pay the 'large car, up to 9 passengers' premium?

Is it not half term next week? May have been when you booked last time so I don't know why the huge difference in price.
But these travel people do put it up come kiddies holiday time.

Booking further in advance may save some as well...I travel Dover - Calais in 2 weeks with caravan, booked in Jan for c £210. P&O wrote to me a few weeks back offering 45% discount on sailings so I called them - same crossing was £420+.

runboy, think you've hit the nail on the head, not only Bank Holiday weekend but also the start of half-term, not exactly off-peak I would suggest.
Also it would appear that cross channel prices have increased over the last year or so, or rather, the large discounts are less available. It seems that the various ferry operators and the tunnel operators have realised that it is better for each other that they learn to live together rather than try and cut each others throats, at least for them; not so good for Joe Public.
