Hello
I have recently bought a 2000W 306 (2.0HDi GLX with climate control a/c). A couple of questions.
First - all the time ignition is switched on (either 1st or 2nd position) the interior heater fan is running slowly, its only quiet and comes from the passenger footwell/airbag/glovebox area.
The air flow switch doesn't really have a specific 'off' position so maybe its normal? it just a diagramatic label for normal mode speed and auto position, no "off" or "0" position as in some other cars.
1) do other 306s do this? - I assume it continues when engine is running but can't hear it above eng noise
2) is it the heater fan or another motor running?
2) is there a true Off position?
3) if not normal, any ideas on problem or cure?
The second minor issue is the indicator relay switch clicks of its own accord! I can get it to do it when I touch the indicator stalk so obviously a loose connection in the wiring at that end. Is this common? I haven't got the tool to remove the steering column surround but can get to a set of multi plugs, i'll give them a poke, will get it done under warranty unless anyone here has an easy solution.
Many thanks in advance. Mike.

Hi
Yes the fan is ment to run very slowy even with the fan switch set to off, Gets the airflow through the car, & yes the fan is up behind the glovebox.
Its easy to change when it does fail too, either it will go full speed or it will be dead.
NOTE: If it starts failing & going full speed & you cant turn it off at the switch, PULL THE FUSE OUT QUICK! Else you start to burn the wiring lome out at the fans relay!
You might be hearing the cabin temperature sensors fan running in the background.
Find the little tiny vent on the facia & stick your ear next to it, Hear a whirring sound?

If it's like my wife's Xantia HDi, if the switch is at "auto" the fan usually runs and certainly the little sensor fan is always on as Lee says. If you put the switch to the first manual fan diagram it overrides the auto and is in fact off. Moving switch further sets the fan speed manually to what you want. I find "auto" annoying at times because if outside temp is same as inside temp there is little airflow through the car which I don't like.

Hi
That little sensor fan takes getting used to at first, you learn to live with it.
Normally comes on with the key in the second click, engine running position.

This was exactly the situation I had in a 405. The indicator stalk eventually failed resulting in me having to drive home using hand signals accompanied by some strange looks.
I reckon this is an indication, pun quite intentional :-D that the switch could be dicky, so if it can be fixed under warranty why not get it done.

Hi
Had a sticky switch in my 95 405, Couldnt get a second hand one & wasnt going to pay £50 for a new one.
Took it apart to clean & re grease it, took 2 atemps to put it back together, but it works like new again.

Both my partner and I have the 306 HDi - she a T-reg estate, and I an X-reg Meridian hatchback. In both cars the fan runs very slowly as soon as the ignition switch is on position 2, assuming the fan setting is between "auto" and the variable speed range. This appears to be normal.
You will also find the air-conditioning has a mind of its own, and will sometimes switch itself on as the ignition switch is turned. I assume there is some rationale to this, but haven't discovered it yet.
As regards your indicator switch, I think I'd be inclined to get the dealer to sort it out.
Enjoy the car - it really is a lovely drive.

Chris - the compressor clutch may well engage when the ignition is turned on but the a/c system will do no work until the engine is running.

Hi
When the air con turns itself on is the inside of the car very hot?
The 406 I had used to do this & it really got on my nerves, Its the automatic air con trying to cool the car down.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, thats put my mind at rest about the fan. I'll sort the indicator switch. Only had the car a couple of weeks so still learning its characteristics! Very pleased with it so far, 54mpg on the first tank!
I guess the thread can be closed - thanks.

54mpg sounds about right. May improve slightly during the warm season if you don't push it too hard.
