Its a VW special!, CDR 200 or 300 i think, looks really nice, but just has nothing about it sound wise, i'm guessing your right about it being the stereo, because i put my own pioneer in my Golf MK4 and that sounded great, the only prob is this stereo is massive and makes up part of the dash so i cant change it!

VW own brand radios normally have exceptional sound quality especially in the bass area, if you've heard a mk4 one you'll know what i mean, I've had a good old play with a mk5 one and although it's very very user friendly IMO the sound quality has deteariated slighty from mk4 versions but it still sounds good.
*i'm assuming the car is brand new?*
i suppose it is possible that some oik from garage could have blown some of the speakers during delivery or PDA process before you got your hands on it. I've heard customers car radios cranked up to the full in some garages i've been to whilst the've been in the service department. My advice would be to definetly mention it to your garage and ask to have access to a demontrator and have a listen and compare sound. If it's much much better insist on a replacement system under warranty.

its a Marantz/philips if it hasnt been correctly set up will cause it.Marantz are a good make in the hi fi world.but if you have the manual for it check trouble shooting or tell the garage about it.they shouldnt have any problem sorting it out.

on checking the cdr 200 it isnt the best player on the market and has a lot of faults.one is sound quality.but isnt made by philips/marantz.but as has been said you can get an adapter kit to put another unit in.
