Well i think my fuel system is needing cleaned out. I am sure the tank must have a fair amount of sludge etc.
The car isn't starting and i am 100% sure its to do with the fuel system.
So would i take the fuel tank off and clean it out ?
What about the pipes/lines, how do i clean them out ?
thanks

Well heres exactly what happened. I had to change the hand primer pump as the diaphram burst in it which is fairly common in Fords after a year or so. So i replace that and its working ok execpt in the morning i have to prime the pump with 2 pushes before it starts. Well i can live with that till i get it booked in next month.
Well i put in a few cans of diesel from a central heating system, one of the cans was full of sludge on can was ok. I, by miskate put the can of sludgy diesel in. So i'm driving along and everytime i stop, the car stalls. I get back home, leave the car over night and now its impossible to get it started.
I have undone the fuel pipe from the fuel primer pump and put in into a fresh can of diesel and tried to start it that way but still nothing.
Really desperate here.
TIA.

I should have said its a 1.8 diesel LX 1993. I think its still got a couple of years left in it.
I undid the bolts at the injectors and fuel is coming through no problem when i turn the engine over, so what could be likely be wrong with it?

I am no expert on diesels but from what you said maybe blocked injectors/fuel injector pump-would expect to be corrected but just a thought.

Thanks, thats what i'm looking for. Would you suggest draining the fuel tank or just adding the Millers dieselplus to the fuel ?
The Glowplugs havent been replaced in years so i will try that as well.
What about blocked injectors are there any additives to remedy that ?

Johnmac,
Are you sure you have not got an air leak around the fuel filter assembly. I believe this may be a common problem. Happened on the old man's Mondeo TD after being serviced...
Do a search on here or fordmondeo.org for a thread on this subject.
Wouldn't think a blockage is a problem if the car runs OK once started?

Hi
I would still change those glowplugs anyway as a nice new set will aid in easyer starting.
What i do with my fuel additives is wait until iam nearly empty purchase a bottle at say halfords etc and take it with me when i fill up what i do is empty the contents into the tank before i start filling with fuel that way the cleaner has been properly mixed up with the fuel as with some people they just dump it in on top of the fuel already inside the tank.
Here is your shopping list
1. bottle of millers diesel cleaner
2. Good set of glow plugs avoid unknown brands try a reputable brand such as bosch etc
Also try an italien tune whereas you do 70 in 4th instead of 5th this tends to burn off all the cobwebs and spiders in the fuel and exhaust systems.
Hope this helps

To assist all these people who seem to get air-leaks after changing the filter;it's better to remove the whole filter assy. ang change the element in it off the car-then you can see what you are doing and be sure the seals are locating correctly.

let us know how it goes
