Not a lot in all honesty!
My works 2003 SWB van returns about 22MPG - thats driving around the countryside with just me and my briefcase in it. I am somewhat heavy footed but its still poor for a diesel.
They are hopeless if driven hard on the motorway - anything above 80MPH and the economy drops to about 15MPG.
I don't very often use mine for towing, but my colleagues who do reckon they lose 3-5MPG with the (large) trailer on the back.
Not got a roof box, so I'm not sure on that one.

That is shocking! What about other Jap (ok, it's made in Spain, but it's a Japanese design) SWB TD 4x4s? Any real-life consumption figures for a SWB Shogun or a Daihatsu Fourtrak?

SWB Pajero (Shogun)2.8TD will average around 26MPG.

Sure is shocking! My 3.1TD Grand Cherokee gets 25 mpg just pottering back and forth to the office, 28+ on a decent run. Towing a 1500 kg caravan at motorway speeds drops it to 18 - 20. I'd expect a Terrano to beat that.

It's possible that for whatever reason the van has a shorter final drive ratio - could that affect payload? Would it be expected to need to have more acceleration under heavy load, more often, than the car version?
Otherwise 22 mpg seems shockingly bad.

I don't think there's any difference between the van and the normal version in terms of drivetrain. In fact from what the dealer was telling me, they are all imported to the UK as cars, and taken to a place in the North East that stips out the seats and rear glass and fits the van panels and a moulding behind the front seats to make the floor flat. It is for this reason that the van panels always look a different colour - they are sprayed using different batches of paint and they don't blend them in.
Mine is something of a hybrid because it still has the seats in the back - they fold pretty much flat and I don't carry much in the back. Another dealer I spoke to had 5 in stock that were registered as vans but still had the glass in them, but no seats!
We only run them for tax purposes, and since the budget changed all that (from 2007) we will be replacing them with cars or normal 4x4's as they come up for replacement.

My LWB with an auto box will manage 30mpg when cruising at 70mph.
Interesting to note that the 4 speed auto box has a higher (more economical) final drive ratio than the 5 speed manual and with a mechanical lock-up when cruising this might give a better mpg figure for the auto. I consider that a roof box could knock 10% off this figure. Towing might not make much difference if you stick to legal 60mph. Cruise control should not make any diffference.
