If I had dirty injectors what sort of symptoms would I get with the car?
Tried using one of these cleaners that you add to the fuel and will see what happens.

From what I know, the symptoms would be:
Loss or lacking of power. Performance falling.
Juddery gear change
Using a little more fuel
Poor starting
Of course, this usually happens if the car was used on very short town journeys only and has done a very low mileage. Also if the car never gets to optimun operating temperature, this may be the cause.

What symptoms have you got? The 530D has a bit of a reputation for MAF & Turbo problems. See Car-by-Car breakdown.

I do a fair number of short journeys with my 320d and have noticed a definite improvement since using Millers Diesel Power Plus, - faster engine pick up in acceleration and smoother and more even running at tickover.

Yes - we really need to know why you're asking this question..
Excessive smoke/poor performance?

I got a Sep 2000 530d last Oct that after putting about 5000 miles on it has made 7 trips to BMW service for intermittent rough idle and loss of power . They have over the time replaced the fuel injectors, air mass meter, fuel pumps, and pressure converter for turbo - and it still has intermittent rough idle and loss of power. At over £100 per hour labour and no more BMW goodwill contributions (they have covered about 50%) I am not convinced they can diagnose the problem (if its not on their computer ....)
They allege that all this was due to previous owner accidently putting petrol in the fuel but there is no evidence for this. They claim it causes a swarf to form that plugs the injectors and every other bit of the system - they claim they now replace the entire fuel injection system if presented with a petrol in diesel. Sounds unbelievable.

Well, there's some truth in it. Petrol lacks the lubricating properties of Diesel and so putting petrol through the system may cause wear and disintegration of the fuel pump components etc. It all depends on how much petrol gets put through - model Diesels are not as tolerant as the older ones.
I have heard of this happening on newer Mercedes Diesels - it is *expensive* !!!
Having said the above, it looks like they have actually replaced most of the fuel system on your car. Maybe now is that time to take it to a Diesel specialist for further investigation? If the problem is *intermittent* then I would be less inclined to think of it as swarf in the injectors.

Who can I trust as a diesel specialist (in the guildford area)? I think your advise is right and I have lost confidence in the BMW garages where it seems if the computer doesn't diagnose the fault they don't quite know what to look for. If they do spend time looking for the trouble they bill out over £100 per hour!
I wonder why the fuel filter system isn't up to protecting against any swarf if that is the problem?

I believe the filter is prior to the pump (the filter's main job is to protect the pump). Any swarf from the pump will end up in the injectors (which do, I believe, actually have mesh filter screens in them). It sounds like the injectors are being overwhelmed by debris though.
You are quite correct about BMW garages. The diagnostic computer system that BMW dealers have to use used to cost about £53k a few years back. They rely very heavily on electronic diagnostics. The labour charges are a disgrace.

Instead of using expensive cleaners put a pint of petrol in your tank this will clean any dirty injectors.Diesel is so clean these days injectors last for an eternity it is only the cleaner manufactures who ttry to make us think we are still in the dark ages.
