Just seen this on an automotive biz news service. (May have spotted mention of it in BR before but search yielded nil.) Well, is this really news or is the US just catching up on what's been pretty routine over here for some time?
"GM's oil system challenges standard 3,000-mile service recommendation
GM claims it can double or even triple the time between oil changes in vehicles when compared to the common 3,000-mile recommendation simply by being able to evaluate driving conditions using its patented Oil Life System.
"30 Mar 2004, 18:03 GMT - The oil system is currently fitted in about 95% of GM manufactured vehicles as well as on a wide variety of models since the mid-1990s. In total there are an estimated 20 million vehicles on the road that are equipped with GMOLS. The system itself uses an algorithm that tracks engine revolutions and temperature and predicts oil life based on these parameters and driver use.
"The technology represents a departure from a convention industry approach based upon maintenance intervals on mileage. Instead of a complicated list of different services to be performed at different mileage intervals, GM's simplified maintenance schedules are rooted on the change oil light message." Blah blah blah...

BMW and Merc have had this for years. Computer is told how many cold starts, how many miles with engine at good working temp etc and then tells you when to change the oil. Germans have always been good at teaching the Americans things; didn't a German rocket scientist get them to the Moon?!!
|
They've just had a newflash in the US that the unsinkable liner 'The Titanic' has sunk!
How would they cope if told a 30,000 mile interval was now common place? The oil shares would fall through the floor!
|
They've also been working very hard on refining their wheel designs and have concluded that the optimal shape is, err, round.

|
|
Maybe, but it was the Americans who did it.
|
A German laid the foundations of the know-how, he had launched rockets well above the stratosphere in the 40s; the Americans provided the huge amounts of money to make it possible.

Now, now, no Xenophobia please!

Hmmm...Werner von Braun if memory serves, and giving a helping hand was supposedly to get him off the hook of being charged with n*** war crimes. OT.
Noe then stop knocking the Septics, they invented the V-8 and the Harley Davidson, two of the most sublime automotive experiences known to man.
