Hi,
I have just taken delivery of a new Mondeo TDCi 130. The manual says the idle speed should be 750rpm, I have only seen it adle at this once. Normally it idles between 850 - 900 rpm... Anyone who can confirm this?
Apart from that, a very nice car, with all the gizmos, and an excelent price!!
Cheers

Mine idles at 750 except when the engine is still warming up - which is another thread - and when the outside temperature is particularly cold. At such times it will be, as you say, nearer to 900.

My '02 Ghia X TDCi 130, now 71k miles, has always idled at about 650 - 750 except when warming up which it does reasonably quickly unlike, apparently, some others featured in another thread.

Think mine got a problem then :-( only the 2nd time in 600miles did it idle at 750rpm yesterday. Funny thing is if you hold it in a gear and brake until it goes down to 750rpm it near stalls.
I haven't got the heating up problem, 3-4 miles is all it needs, about 2 miles shorter than my old Leon TDi.
One thing I don't like is the gear ratios on the 6 speed box. VW had it right on the Leon/Golf etc, Petrol like spacing giving 32, 54, 81, 110 in first 4 gears. I know the Mondeo is heavier, but it makes for alot of gear changing when the speed range only gives 25, 45, 65, 95 in the first 4 gears.
Just ordered a superchip Bluefin for it, that should improve flexability in higher gears.....

Hi, Mine is an '02 model so is a 130 5 speed, think I prefer the gear ratios on the 5 speed, the 6th on the 6 speed is a bit too high making it too easy to drop below the point where torque starts to build without having to change down, nevertheless the 5 speed is still less than 3000 rpm at 90 mph.

I don't find 6th a problem, anyhing over 60mph in 6th is ok. 90mph gives about 2400rpm.
The problem I find is 1st - 4th gears. Suppose it just takes some time to adjust.

Hi, Problem with the high 6th is that you loose the benefit of the masses of low down torque, i.e. if the speed drops below about 65mph you have to change down as you would in a petrol car to get up to speed quickly, however at 50-55mph in 5th in the 5 speed you just put your foot down and you are doing 90 before you know it.

Sounds then that 6th gear is an overdrive, which must be good for motorway cruising and economy.
There can't be much difference in ratio between 5th in either 'box.
