I see in today's Telegraph that a government minister's chauffeur has escaped a ban after being caught doing 106mph on the M4 because of "The importance of his job". Good to see that with only 30 million licence holders in the UK the courts recognise the difficulty in finding people to drive MP's up and down the country.

It only shows that 106 mph (and 212 on occasion) can be perfectly safe, to the annoyance of the puritans who want an excuse to stop all fun in motoring - or foxhunting or whatever.
If they ever succeed what is the next target - amateur radio or angling or shove halfpenny....?

Ah but admit there is a difference with foxhunting. At least you'll still be able to turn out of the drive in five years and "motor"...the "hunt" would be less certain.

Since when should driving be fun? A-B and not dead is my usual criteria.
Spending countless hours on a motorway inevitably leads to going a little faster, a little faster, a little faster just to try and get the whole tedium over with asap.
I'm sure 106 can be safe in the right circumstances, but who decides when? I don't know anyone who is a bad driver (or at least admit it), so the speed laws give us a point of reference to be safe. To protect us from those other, rubbish drivers ;-)
