My next door neighbour has had a long running intermittent problem starting his AX.
Today he had a \'tune up man\' out who has diagnosed and fixed the problem. The bit that he has replaced is similar to a HT lead but it has a reddy/brown electrical connector one end and a diffrent type of connector at the other end. Some sort of sensor that has being affecting his petrol/electrical performance according to my neighbour.
He was charged £70 for it including £35ish for the bit.
Can anyone tell me what he has paid for please?

From your description ,I would think this part is the crankshaft position sensor.this would definitely give starting probs &the price sounds about right.

What on earth does that do please?

This sensor 'reads' the rotational speed and the position of the flywheel and informs the cars control unit (brain) so it can calculate when to send the signal to fire the plugs at the correct time. Basically it has replaced the points in an old distributor. If this sensor goes intermittent or fails the brain cannot 'see' the engine rotating so cannot trigger a spark or the fuel injector(s) to start the engine.
Hope this makes sense,
Andrew
