My Old Dads Fiesta Auto is stalling occassionally when it's idling and when he puts it in drive at the traffic lights.
Local Ford Agent put it on Diagnostic Tester and said; "Uneconomical Repair....New Gearbox Required.....£1600 to you"!!!!!!!!!!!
1997(P) 1.25 auto, 22k mls, reg. serviced.
Observations appreciated.

I'm surprised that a 7 yaers old gaerbox needs replacing. Take it to other ford agents and independant garages see what they say. It may cost a lot less to repair/replace it at an independant garage.

There was a long and very similar thread a while back...
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=13236&...e
I just read it through and it only seems to affect a certain type of box, and the TSB mentioned only goes up to cars built to 10/98 (although as yours is a 99 it could have been built in 98). Have a read, but basically:
a) it's a well known fault, because the box is rubbish
b) it's not repairable without significant expense!
Sorry!

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks RichardW, That was an interesting thread.
I wonder if there's a way to get Ford to help out on this.
If my father hadn't done such low mileage this fault would have become apparent much sooner.
P.S. It IS a 97 model,so it all points to what you wrote.
Thanks for the help, I'll give the Old Man the bad news.
Cabby.
