My MB E320 CDI has developed a horrific brake squeal. Unless you are braking very softly the brakes will squeal.
The car is only just over a year old and has only covered 22,000 mls.
What causes this and what are the remedys?

The brake pad will squeal as it oscillates within it's mounting at a very high frequency ..ie...juddering some 10,000 times a second.
The only way to stop this is by damping these oscillations....
Typically, this is done by the manufacturer fitting a soft shim to the back of the pad, or covering it contact point witha thick sticky grease, or applying a thin film of a flexible coating to the back of the pads.
Mercedes may have used brake grease which has sense washes/worn off. The only real cure is to refit the existing pads or replace them, ensuring they are fitted with adequate ant-squeal precautions.
