This is a second car and is also used by 17yo son.
82000 miles, cambelt done at 65000, going well apart from occas electrical glitches. Boot gets a bit wet.
Only worth £1800-£2K on trade-so would you just run it on 'til it drops or is it a big repair bill waiting to happen?
It does the job for me at the moment and with a young driver would hesitate at letting him in a new car.

A diesel at 82,000 miles - barely run in! I assume it's been serviced (you mention it's had the cambelt done). I'd definitely keep it, the odd repair that may be required will probably not outweigh the cost of buying a newer car and taking the hit of early depreciation. This car's done its depreciating and you say it's doing its job, therefore enjoy the benefits of cheaper, older car driving.

I kept mine until 125K. Water pump replaced with second belt change. Otherwise it just took normal servicing. The trim, seats, locks for example, were not up to the usage. The engine felt like it would go round the clock again. What would you replace it with, and at what cost?

I would keep it, just regularly (5000 mile intervals) change the oil and filter and the only trouble you should have will be bits and bobs/suspension bushes etc. The most common bits required will usually be available from German and Swedish or Euro Car Parts and if you don't work on cars yourself then there are plenty of good VW specialists around.

I'm sure that HJ has made reference to Golfs and the fact that in general, they go thro' a bad time at around seven years old and then, as long as they are serviced and repaired properly etc, will serve you as well as any car that age.
Sorry for the long sentence but I hope that you get the drift!
I have a 15 year old Golf which my wife hates but I love it to bits. Definitely the best banger to have despite being under powered, crap steering/driveability etc!

Oh and by the way, cure the boot leak as soon as you can with a new (old) seal from the scrapyard.
|
Thanks all. Think I'll keep it at least 'til it's 10.
The 'expensive repair' I had in mind is the injection pump/distributor-I once heard they sometimes cause trouble and are v. expensive. Is this true?

No problems with a M reg Passat TDi at 120K, L reg Audi80 TDi at 133k and R Passat 110TDi at 145K (touching wood furiously...). Use Millers Diesellube if you are worried. If they do go wrong, as ever, cost will depend on where you go...
