I need to hire a car, one way for a week, from Munich to northern Italy in October. I thought I would be clever by booking it early but Hertz are quoting 1200 Euros (£800) for a Focus sized car which seems stupidly high.
Does anyone know of a relaible and cheap hire firm or discount site using Hertz?

I had www.holidayautos.co.uk recommended to me, although went with Hertz in the end because I found them to be competitive with Ryanair discount.

second that - used them in Spain last week, found 'em cheap (£85 for 5 days with Focus) and efficient.

If you intend to hire car in Germany and leave in Italy, Europcar are quoting £320 approx for 7 days hire incl taxes etc. from central Munich to central Milan for Astra type car.

Use holidayautos.co.uk and if you book over the internet you will get full coverage against any 'non-waiverable excess' - i.e. you will not be liable for any costs in the event of damage - so no need for Super-CDW or whatever they call it.
If you book with them for a car from Munich then the car will actually be supplied by Budget. If you fancy an auto then ask them for a free upgrade to auto when at the counter and you will probably get it (they have loads of autos for the Americans).
They will also give you a 'parking disc' (required for many parking lots) and a rather nice European road atlas.
I use them regularly and have never had a problem.
The rental return at Munich is a common facility for all the rental agents there - so final inspection is the same whoever you rent from. They are mega-efficient and very honest (I left a load of cash in a car once and the guy came chasing after me with it!).
I use Hertz too sometimes (I am going to Hamburg soon and they offer a good rate there). If you are booking with Ryanair (gulp!) then the 'linked' Hertz prices are actually cheaper than Hertz's 'regular' prices.

You do mean a one-way crossborder hire, don't you?
|
www.fastcarhire.co.uk/. I have these people to be consistently cheapest but they may not be helpful on a German pick-up, Italian drop-off, which I think is what you want.

Novarentacar.co.uk are OK

Never accept the first price from Holidayautos. They usually have a better price and if you say that you have a better quote, they will usually match it.
Good company - never had any problems save for when they booked the car 90 minutes later than I wanted and the airport would not be nice and let it go!
