Toyota Prius - Two MOTs In One Year (6 Months)? - Dave1UK

I was having a look at some Toyota Priuses mainly ones that have been PCO licensed and used as Taxis/Uber etc by private sellers.

Went to test drive two by one seller and could tell there was something wrong as both were pulling to one side. He tried to fob it off on an uneven road surface, know he was full of it as when my wheel alignment was off it done the same thing. Most likely some suspension issue/shoddy repair work. All the MOTs on it were clean 0 advisories ever.

One thing I noticed was that there was a trend of some of them having been MOT'd twice a year? So for example Mar 2022 then Sep 2022, this occured numerous times throughout the years not just a one off. This was the case among multiple seller cars.

What could be a reasoning for doing so? Seems a bit odd.

Something to do with being a private hire vehicle, perhaps. They need testing every 6 months but I thought no additional certificate was issued - maybe different now it is all online.

Private hire vehicles over 12 months old need mot test every 6 months. (Including black cabs)

Makes sense now I guess.

Don't taxi's have to be MOT'd more than once per year? (I'm sure I've heard or read something along that lines)

The Prius is a very reliable car, but why would you want one that used to be a taxi?. Goodness knows what has happened in the back seat over the course of its life! :-(

Wouldn't be my choice as it will have had a hard life. But if the price is right it could be worth a deal.

Not specifically after an ex-taxi but like 90% of market are ex-taxi from my searches anyway. Not concerned about the seats as majority use seat covers anyway as they prefer fake leather covers than the usual fabric dependant on the model of course.

I don’t think there’s an emoji for that.

I would have thought the main dealer network or the likes of Motorpoint the best bet to find cars like these that haven't been on hire and reward.

Maybe try a search on Carwow and see what offers arrive from various sources, when we were looking for a Corolla estate couple of years ago some quite tempting offers came through.

My budget doesn't stretch that far for the newer models and not a fan of finance etc. would rather own the car outright. Carwows lowest Prius is ~£12k.

Just a thought..would a fully electric car suit your needs?

There are some Nissan Leafs ( leaves?) Going that seem a utter bargain, at least 2 fellow members have them and are more than happy.

I really do think you'll struggle to find a Prius within budget that isn't approaching the end ofbits life, taxi trade love them as your aware .

Unfortunately wouldn't due to access/charging and current driving circumstances otherwise would of seen them as an option as well.

Auris shares the same engine drivetrain as Prius, more likely to find one that hasn't been a taxi in budget.

I agree with you about finance etc, always buy outright.

100% agree. I've had finance in the past but ever since a career "hic-up" in the early nineties I've always bought outright. Initially cheap as chips banger territory until I saved up then built up to new/nearly new end of model at a Yorkshire discount then keep for a decade++++ .

I was actually considering an Auris, however the hatchback seemed a bit small and the estate too big so wasn't too keen for inner London driving. The estate was definitely too big as had one parked outside our house.
