Hello i need help with escort it has big problems to get up to operating temp while idling it does get there eventually but when driving it takes like 20 km to get the heater blow warmer air. When idling i can feel that the upper radiator hose is getting warm slowly but it is not under pressure only when it gets up to some tempeature it gets some pressure which tells me that the thermostat is working. I have read about the cvh thermostat housing and it has some kind of plastic ball inside that melts when engine overheats which i think is my problem because last year my engine overheated because of faulty fan when it overheated i replaced the coolant tempeature sensor and the thermostat thinking it would help but it didnt since then i have no heat :( . Now that i know the ball inside is melted i know that coolant is bypassing the thermostat going straight into the radiator. I wanted to get new housing but that is impossible in my country nobody has it anymore so im here to ask if there is any possibility how to repair the housing or maybe partially plug the hole so that it can still flow trough but not so much. Thanks for any suggestions on repair.

Sounds to me as if your thermostat never closes ? It is meant to be closed until the engine and coolant get hot enough to be sent to the radiator, which should feel cold for some time before suddenly getting warm - when the stat has opened.

What do you mean by 'CVH thermostat'? CVH refers to the type of engine. I'm only aware of one thermostat. I'd suggest you look again at the thermostat. As Andrew-T suggests, it seems like it's permanently open.

I meant cvh termostat housing , there also is zetec type one that is completely different. And no its not the termostat being open all the time i have checked it its new as i already said the old one that was in there was also fine and closed when i pulled it out. So i dont think so its an issue with the thermostat.

From your description, I would think the inside of the thermostat housing is corroded and doesn’t allow the thermostat to sit correctly, so you are going to get coolant by passing the stat , causing the engine not to reach the correct temperature. Looks like this part is now very difficult to find and may be second hand only .

No its not corroded i had it dissaembled and its completely clean as i said coolant is passing trough the bypass hole that completely goes around the thermostat there should be a ball inside but it isnt there because it has melted.

It may be possible to get a thread cut in the by pass hole , then get a bolt to screw into it to blank off any by pass coolant flow

Okay that is a great idea but wont it damage something why is that hole there it has to have some functionality.

I guess it’s done the job . Popped out or Melted when the car previously overheated. As you can’t get another housing , you don’t have much option . Have you looked for a second hand part ?
