e learned so much in last few days and written off cars as I want to buy one.

I found this post really helpful and as I sadly don’t have a personal friend in the repair trade I’m hoping that I might get some help on here x

Here’s a pic of my cat S car pre repair. Does this look like a fairly simple fix? Or perhaps you can’t tell enough from just this pic.

I’m trying to clarify that if I got hit in this spot again that the car safety would function still as it should.

It’s passed its MOT and I will test drive tomorrow to confirm it’s all driving smoothly as I’ve been advised.

I know MOT covers suspension and steering checks but do I need to get a more thorough diagnostic and analysis? I will also check for any signs of movement around the car…

I can’t post the pic yet as I’m a new member, it’s on Flickr a/c J FifeXX

Thanks for taking the time

Cat S - is a structural write off. Myself I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Same here.

I wouldn't go anywhere near any write off's, but especially not structural. Absolute madness putting your passengers lives at risk to save a few quid.

I'm still 100% against it in principle, but I kind of understand the lure if the car in question was something particularly desirable. But a B-Max?, really?

As a related question, do insurers take account of a Category car when calculating a premium ? Surely if they are such a threat the premium should be loaded ?

It is an interesting question. Whether the car has been written off is a question asked if getting an insurance quote, but as I've never entertained the notion buying a write off I've no idea what the effects are on insurance cost.

I'd much sooner get an older or higher miles example of whatever car it is than a write off, seems by far the lesser evil/risk to me.

Tell us how old the car is, and (if you know) what has been done to get it back on the road. It may have been jigged to straighten it out, for instance. In which case getting the tracking checked may be worth while, unless it comes with evidence that has been done ?

Unless it's stupidly cheap and you know what was done, walk away.
