Has anyone on here got advice on headlight upgrades please?

Each winter reminds me how poor the headlights are on my wife’s A1 in comparison to mine and other cars I’ve driven. She came back from a late night trip yesterday and mentioned again how poor they seem. We’ve had the car from new in 2017 and plan to keep it so don’t mind spending a bit on it.

Thanks in anticipation.

There are plenty of threads on here about headlights - usually power, occasionally beam cut-off and suchlike. Modern car headlamps are usually too strong, partly because makers won't bother to reduce brightness after dark, using strong lamps for daytime visibility. That has caused a brightness war, led by LED designers.

Normally it results in Can't Beat 'em so Join 'em - which I suppose you are thinking about. Sometimes writers complain about flare when driving, perhaps suggesting an eyesight check for cataracts, which are not always the result of old age - I know someone who had them treated in his 40s.

One problem with everyone having searchlight beams is that things outside the illuminated area are pretty well invisible.

The headlights on our 1.0 TSi Fabia (same car as the Audi with a different body) were also totally r****** to the point of being almost dangerous. Looked at fitting some of the higher rated but still legal halogen bulbs but they were expensive and seemed to have a pretty short life.

Our solution was not to use it in the dark unless absolutely essential. Our other car, a Skoda Superb has LED lamps which are brilliant.

Fabia was replaced by a Toyota Yaris which in the Design trim also has LED lamps and they are equally brilliant so no issues now. Feel sorry for people who have bought the Icon spec Yaris which has halogen lamps with no option to upgrade (our local plod has those so no chance of getting seen and caught).

Don't fit aftermarket LED bulbs, they are illegal on cars made after some time in the 80's (strange construction and use rules). It would be an automatic MOT failure and potentially invalidate your insurance since technically the car would not be legal on the public road.

The law on LED has been recently changed.

See MOT rules now, it's NOT illegal to fit aftermarket led bulbs as an upgrade.

As long as the direction of the lights are within mot guidelines, it's a pass!

I’ve just read the rules . Anything converted to hid or led from halogen is a fail , unless it’s a complete headlight upgrade .

I beg your pardon, your correct.

You can fit complete headlamp assembly's with led bulbs as you said.

Not sure a tester would actually look at each bulb though, during a test, if the pattern passed?

But your right.

As a mot tester in a previous life , these aftermarket led bulbs rarely give a good beam pattern, in fact sometimes their light output performance is worse than a regular halogen bulb .

Are the lens clean and not 'yellowed'?

Have you found the beam height adjustment (I know folk who weren't aware of it)?

If the bulbs are halogen, you could go down the path of uprated ones, but I'd advise against fitting LEDs as it could potentially fail MOT.

The lenses are pretty much like new. No condensation and very clear and clean. Yes we’ve used the height adjustment to no. 3 which does help a bit as it extends the ‘reach’ of the beam. They’re just not very good imho compared with other cars. The bulbs are original.

I would definitely upgrade to Philips or Osram hi performance bulbs , but it’s important to make sure any bulb does not go above the 55 watt rating. Serious damage to the electronic systems can occur if the circuits are overloaded.

Nothing reduces the proper functionality of headlights more than a build up of gritters road salt on the lights during a cold snap. Returning in the dark after a longish drive on a cold dry day-I can honestly say the efficiency of the headlight beam was no greater than driving with side lights only.
A good headlight wash the next morning with warm soapy water and a good rinse 100% solved the issue at a stroke

You often read of supposed short life of the higher quality legal upgrade bulbs, have used Osram and Philips (only those makes) upgrades for years, can vaguely recall one bulb failure but couldn't tell you which car or bulb make was involved and it must be many years ago now.

Sometimes headlights are simply set too low from the start, maybe if you feel qualified and can locate the adjuster screws you might think about bringing the settings up a tad, i had to do this with my last truck, also made by VW group, the lights as fitted were appalling, lots of illumination to the nearside hedgerow and nothing at all where needed, i also fiited higher rated bulbs to that which helped a little (Osram Truckmate), some German marques have sharlyp cut of beam patterns and as noted by Andrew anything beyond the beam was in complete darkness...thankfully present Swedish truck has LEDs and are the best headlights i've ever had on any vehicle, spotlights also LEDs which light the road up for a mile or so ahead, not as you get many opportunities for full beam these days.

Don't forget spotlessly clean windows and mirrors help no end, facing bright oncoming lights and those crass ridiculously bright illuminated advertising boards is bad enough anyway but when you have grimy windows the light attack diffuses across the whole window.

Thanks for helpful replies so far.

I do make sure that the screen is clean inside and out and the headlamps are wiped if I haven’t been able to wash it for a while. I was on a country road bend last night when a car with bright lights came at me and for a second or two Icompletely lost the way on the road. Not going too fast either. I do tend to drive the A1 slower than mine at night purely because of the lights. My wife complains about them too so it’s not just me.

Not much use, GB, unless you drive on dead straight roads with no change of gradient - say in America or Australia. If all roads were like that, strong beams with sharp cut-off would be OK, but in any UK town there only needs to be a slight hump for oncoming drivers to be blinded.

I guess the next question is do I fit them myself or pay someone to do it. Just watched on YouTube and the whole headlight has to come out to fit them. I’m reasonably handy but would rather someone do it for me really. Halfords seem to only fit their own brands which I don’t want. I guess a local decent garage would do it or the bloke around the corner who’s pretty good on smaller stuff.

It’s not too bad a job , at least you don’t need to remove the bumper.

Just had a watch of this chaps video, whilst its not the easiest all the bolts do come undone from above there's no need to remove the front bumper or get in from behind after unclipping a mud liner insert.

I'd give it a go if it was my car, but if you're happy to pay the chap around the corner (he might like to see the video himself for torx bolts location) a few quid, Osram 220's are on Black Friday deal www.amazon.co.uk/OSRAM-BREAKER-brightness-headligh...1

Depending on the fixings, removing the headlight is better than trying to replace the bulbs with it in situ. My mk3 Focus is easy. My Avensis was a horrible back breaking job.
