Have noticed that when cold, my car (which I bought yesterday, 16 months old / 17,000 miles) judders badly when releasing the clutch in 1st gear. Also, occasionally, when selecting 3rd gear (from 2nd) it feels, what I can only describe as \'crunchy\' (as though the clutch isn\'t engaged properly).
I am upset that i did not pick this up on the test drive - I can only assume the car was warn / hot and this made the difference.
Can anybody tell me what they think the problem may be, whether the two are connected and if it can be easily sorted?
Many thanks in advance

Sounds like a new clutch wanted.Could be caused by rear main crank seal leaking into clutch assembly.Or previous owner rode the clutch.from what you said. >>when selecting 3rd gear (from 2nd) it feels, what I can only describe as 'crunchy'<<
clutch plate not releasing from flywheel properly ie dragging
would assume clutch plate is either badly worn or has oil on it
But as you did not mention the car could even be cable adjuster
not working ok.or if hydraulic a leak.? need to know what car it is?

And the car is??

And more to the point, where was it bought from? sounds like this should go back for rectification free of charge.

Hello.
What kind of car is it.
For all we know it could be a rideon lawnmower.

Warranty job from sounds of it?
|
UPDATE:-
I have had a new clutch fitted under warranty. This has totally rectified the juddering. However, very occasionally I still experience a crunch when engaging 3rd gear (when hot or cold).
What do you think the problem is & what should I do?
thanks

I may be wrong here but sounds like syncro cone worn.to simplify it is a clutch between gears when changing gear it speeds up gear you are going into to prevent crunching. should be warranty job again.

Thanks for the reply Mech1.
Is it a big job to replace the syncro cone?
1st & 2nd hard to engage sometimes aswell. Also I have noticed a very slight whirring sound when depressing the clutch when changing from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd.
Do you think this is connected?
thanks

It sounds as if you have more than one problem there.I would take it back to where you bought it and get them to sort it
out as it is under warranty.
