Our Yaris is now 7.5 years old, covered 45,000 miles doing school run, commutes, local trips etc, rarely sees the motorway.

It came with a 5 year warranty, but then became eligible for the new system whereby a new 12 month warranty is provided at every service up to ten years old 100,000 miles. It was serviced in March this year at the main dealer.

At the MOT in June (done at my local garage) it was flagged the rear wheel bearings were grinding slightly I checked and they were right, but no immediate concerns. Roll on a few months and a few thousand miles and we did go on the motorway last weekend and the in car rumble was very noticeable.

Before taking to my local mechanic I remembered the warranty so checked the Ts and Cs online and it stated bearings are covered up to 100,000 miles, but there is the usual 'wear and tear' get out clause.

Called local Toyota dealer on Tuesday, explained the issue to the service receptionist who was skeptical it was covered, but drop the car in anyway.

Dropped it in at 8am this morning, told it may be a couple of days as they needed to assess the problem and may need parts, Asked if we needed a courtesy car in which case we'd need to go back next week or if not they would give us a lift back home or office, neither were needed,

They called at 11am and I was expecting a diagnosis and 'sorry but that isn't covered'. I was wrong, the call was to let me know that the job was done. Both rear wheel bearings had been replaced and no charge as they are covered under the annual warranty extension,

Brilliant service all round.

That's great to hear! We'll worth keeping up dealer servicing if it keeps your warranty going.

My son has a Aygo, roughly 3 years old, this year despite warnings from me and others he decided to do its annual service himself, he's mechanically competent, month later his rear parking camera started playing up, Toyota will look at it but obviously will want paying, think he's learnt a little lesson.....

Try getting something like that fixed under the MG 7 year warranty.

Commendable service. That’s what keeps Toyota head and shoulders above the others.

Look at all the issues with Honda brake pedal compensators from a company that always used to surprise you with their generosity when there was a genuine complaint .

To be fair I had similar experience when my Forester needed a new wheel bearing at 4.5 years old. That was the days of 3 year manufacturer, followed by a 2 year limited warranty.

That was also changed under the limited 2 year warranty.

Brilliant service all round.

With all the good things we hear about Toyotas I would expect nothing less. If their cars are so well made, bearings which failed at 45K miles ought to be replaced FOC if only to save face and embarrassment :-)

I seem to remember that worn rear wheel bearings were a weak point on the Mk1 Yaris. And also on the Forester, but on all 4 corners. Seems a shame that they don't change to an improved design for successive models, but that's true of many manufacturers.

Impressive customer service.

Certainly is. Maybe worth adding to the site's Good Garage Guide?

I don't know how much use is made of the GGG, but I suspect much of it is well out of date. Many years ago I added my (then) local indie in Runcorn to the list, then much later reported that he was no longer doing regular service work. That garage is still on the list so I guess there may be a few others like it ?

Possibly. I remember you emailing us and I forwarded your email onto the Editor. Unfortunately we can't do any more, moderators don't have Admin access to other parts of the site.

I'd expect that sort of service from Toyota tbh.

My wife's Yaris is now coming up to 5 years and 25k miles and its never been anywhere other than the supplying dealer for service/MOT, so we therefore automatically extend the warranty every year.

We'll do that for up to the 10 years it runs IF we keep this one, but I'd expect a good deal should we decide to upgrade at any time given it will have a full dealer service history.

I would have expected no less from Toyota.

However, as said the rear wheel bearings on the mk1 were prone to wearing out so why does this still appear to be the case on later models, i would expect at least 100k miles before any bearing wore out.

I know no one is apparently capable of servicing a vehicle any more, but when bearings were of taper design and easily replaceable without having to buy a complete hub (genuine hubs are not cheap) it was the matter of a few minutes to repack with grease which even if performed only twice in a vehicle's life generally saw them last the life of the car.

We all know the reasoning for bearings being staked in, it's for rapid replacement, but now its a new hub how long before its a complete new axle assembly and taking this to its natural conclusion a complete replacement car.

This thread reminds me of a former colleague who was extolling the virtues of the 10 year (from memory) warranty on her Miele washing machine. She had had them out 3 times in under 6 years.

Our Miele tumble drier:- bought half price as a demo model - is now 14 years old. Faultless so far - touch wood.

ive a yaris hybrid 2017.dealership serviced for the first 3 years up to 23k now at 91k. ive self serviced using main dealer service kits. i think iam out of pocket, had to replace both rear bearing one twice and recently a front bearing, both electric windows, 3 tpms valves,,both front headlight bulbs. service manager told me i could get a service at 99k and they would warrant all those things for 10k.

Toyota - Toyota extended warranty experience - daveyjp

Forgot to add this was our first warranty repair.

Whilst in they also did a health check and quoted for two tyres, but they aren't needed yet. Price was £70 each fitted for Davanti, probably not what I'd choose, but price was very competitive.

Headlight bulbs? I doubt if they'd be replaced under warranty.

What? Did you think you'd be able to run a car for nothing?

Great-I wonder if they did this for you because you always had Toyota servicing with them?

No offence but that's the whole point, use the dealer for service, expect some help and goodwill if and when a problem arises .

Recently needed a new stop bulb for my 21 year old RAv4 and decided to get one from my main Toyota dealer.

Examining the blown one which was marked “ Stanley Made in Japan” the parts guy suggested that it could be the original bulb fitted in the factory !

Toyota - Toyota extended warranty experience - daveyjp

Not quite, whilst it has always been main dealer serviced, even if you miss a few if you then take it for a main dealer service, have any repairs carried out the service will include a 12 month warranty up to 10 years 100,000 miles..

Toyota - Toyota extended warranty experience - John F

Interesting story, but I would be interested to know the total cost of the presumably annual dealer services plus perhaps unnecessary extra work, e.g. too early pad and possibly even disc replacement. At 45,000 miles it should have needed little more than four oil changes plus the usual unavoidable MoT checks. My Californian dil has an ancient Scion Tc (erstwhile upmarket Toyota) with approx 90,000 miles - the rear bearing(?s) have been humming for ages, but as it only does local journeys it's not a problem.

oh and both drop links. everything on this car has failed in pairs. toyota sell me the full service kit at £80 was 70 three years back . so ive changed oil 6 times. full drain down. never needed a top up. main dealer is great .but if i fix it myself i can do it straight away or when it suits me. last tpms valve they wanted 2 weeks booking ahead. nearby discount garage said yer bring it in. it was done in an hour or so

Toyota - Toyota extended warranty experience - blindspot

oh yer. i was gob smacked when i went into aylesbury toyota to get a front hub nut ,waited 20 minutes to speak to some one. it would be a. 4 day wait for a front hub nut. That must fit most all cars. The coffee is great
