Vauxhall Corsa D (2007) - Speedo sometimes stuck at 0 for journey - peanutstew

Hi all

I tried to read around on the subject before posting, but nobody's speedo problem sounded like mine, so I was hoping with my different set of symptoms people might be able to work out what might be wrong...

Basically, it either works or if doesn't. When it gets stuck, it only ever gets stuck on 0, not at various random speeds. If it is stuck at 0, it will be so from the moment I start the car and for the rest of the journey. If it is working fine, it will work fine for the whole journey.

All else seems to be working fine.

Any thoughts or things I can try?

Many thanks

Sounds like a problem with the Speedo gauge in the cluster . Have you tried tapping the front of the pod to see if the needle moves ?
Vauxhall Corsa D (2007) - Speedo sometimes stuck at 0 for journey - Andrew-T

Old cars used to have a direct drive from the gearbox to the speedo, but newer ones use the feed from a Hall sensor on the driveshaft ? Might that be misbehaving ?

Sadly not so simple on modern cars . The speed signal is generated from the abs module.

Many thanks for the replies.

I'll try tapping the front, thanks for the tip. By "pod" I guess you just mean tapping the "glass" in front of the speed dial?

RE: old cars vs modern, what category does 2007 fall into and which is likely the set up I have from the two described? Is there any way I can find out for sure?

Thanks again

Yes , give the glass on the pod a tap to see if that gets it going . As I previously stated , there is no gearbox or output shaft drive , the road speed signal for the speedometer reading is generated from the abs module.

Great, thanks for confirming. I'll try giving it a bit of a thump, and will also monitor for any patterns of when it is/isn't working in the meantime.

Can then go from there.

Is the worst case scenario potentially expensive?

My Haynes manual for the Pug 207 mentions that some (presumably entry-level) models with the small petrol engine had direct connection to the gearbox. The 207 started in 2006, so your car just might be similar ?

Have you established that when the speedometer stops working, that the odometer also stops recording the mileage?
Vauxhall Corsa D (2007) - Speedo sometimes stuck at 0 for journey - peanutstew

No, I haven't actually, thanks for the recommendation. I'll check for that next time it stops working. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for your info too Andrew.

I had the speedo stick at 0 mph, then work for a mile or two then back to 0.

Changing the 14 year old OEM battery cured the issue instantly, it had started first time but when tested was declared due for replacement,; battery issues can cause instrument problems

Interesting... Mine seems to be working or not per journey, rather than within a journey. That being said, I mostly only do very short journeys so who knows?

The car was inherited so will have to look back to see if or when the battery has ever been changed.

These things might be completely and utterly unrelated, but a couple of problems we used to have but have been ok for the last month a two:

- when you shut the driver side window it would hit the top (i.e close) but bounce straight back again and start going down. Would have to repeat several times until it finally stayed shut.

- the boot would take a fair few attempts to open.

I mention them in case they could also be the sign of a failing battery?

Thanks so much for the help everyone, really appreciate it.

Cheers

I would have thought that if you have a failing battery in a diesel car, you might notice it was getting harder to start ? And if the battery may be 17 years old, it is pretty certainly due for renewal ....

No problems starting the car, but it is petrol, not diesel.

The fact that the battery starts the car is no real indication of the battery condition. You need to get it properly tested so that the actual capacity is near it’s rated figure (cca)

Sorry - I thought D usually meant diesel ... :-)

Hi folks

Had to make a few trips today and can confirm the following:

- On a couple of occasions the speedo stayed on zero. Turning the caroff and back on again got it going.

- Tapping/banging the glass had no effect.

- The odometer continues to work as normal when the speedo is stuck at zero.

Not sure if any of that helps narrow down what it might/might not be?

Thanks again for all the help.

If the odometer continues to work , then it looks like there’s a problem in the instrument cluster . The problem with this is , you can’t fit a second hand pod , because it’s part of the immobiliser network. Your pod may be repairable.

Hi @elekie&a/c doctor - or anyone else reading :)

You say I can't replace the instrument cluster with another one... Is that because the car's mileage is set by the cluster, and so putting in a new one would not transfer the correct mileage? Or is there another reason why you can't replace it and if so please could you explain?

With regards fixing it, I've come across a couple of videos on YouTube where dry solder joints were the problem. Was that the kind of fix you had in mind? Here's the links in case they are of interest to you or anyone in the future:

I'm guessing fixing will be the only option if replacement is not possible.

My wife did ring around a couple of places last week. One said £80 to have a look and £40 to fix if dodgy wiring is the problem, but with no guarantee it can be fixed. The other one said at least £400. She thought he said that was to replace the cluster with new but can't be certain.

Many thanks

The instrument pod is part of the engine immobiliser system , if you disconnect it or fit a s/hand pod, the car won’t run . As the fault is intermittent, it may be an idea to send it to a company that can repair it . I wouldn’t recommend you try and repair it www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/

I used that company a year ago to fix my Focus cluster. Very quick turnaround and has worked perfectly since.

Thank you both, that's really helpful.

If you don't mind me asking, how quick was the turnaround and how much did it cost?

Cheers

£130 but you need to add on the delivery getting it to their place. I think that was another £20 (RM Next Day)

I removed the cluster on a Sunday, sent it off Monday morning and it was back on the Thursday. But it can be longer depending on what the fault is. Mine was the usual degraded solder so no parts needed.
