There's an interesting YouTube channel run by a mobile mechanic who specialises in DPFs and related issues, he gives a real insight into how diesel emission systems work and how the majority of main dealers and other mechanics don't understand them.

Well worth a look, especially for owners of vehicles with the JLR V6 diesel: www.youtube.com/@ORileysAutos/videos

Seems a handy chap and not a million miles from us should the need for Diesel expertise arise.

Watched a few of his videos over time, and he like many other small businesses now and again come across people who seem to assume his time and travel is worthless and try to weasel out of paying.

I wish all such types the infestations of the fleas of a thousand camels, pay the people who turn up and do their jobs properly you low lifes...conversely such types ensure those of us that are known good customers/payers are attended to promptly when the need arises....is there such a thing as a good customer guide (rate a workman type thing but in reverse), there should be..

".is there such a thing as a good customer guide (rate a workman type thing but in reverse), there should be.."

The closest to that is possibly AirBnB, where guests (= paying customers) get a rating from their host.

Uber drivers also rate riders. In fact this is one of the few things drivers see before deciding on accepting the ride.

4.5 is considered a low rating in Uber's system. Most people have 4.7 to 4.9 rating.

O Riley must have saved his customers thousands in DPF replacements.

It would be good to hear from some of his customers and could save them thousands against main dealer prices

Not sure where the problem is really. The whole dpf system isn’t that hard to understand, and they all work the same way. And I’m sure the manufacturers have a comprehensive fault diagnosis flow charts for dpf problems. So I’m not sure why mechanics, especially main dealers, can’t follow their manufacturers own procedures of checking and testing components and processes.

I've little confidence in many (so called) mechanics, ever since I was recovered and they stated "I don't know how long the batteries last" about an army convoy and on rattling drop links "I don't know why they fit them, as they're not necessary".

I’m sure main dealers are able to fix DPF problems but mostly the outcome is to change the DPF for a new one . This will cost thousands of pounds but in most cases will effect a lasting fix.

Is there any evidence that these temporary clean outs actually work? My local cleaner requires customers to deliver the DPF unit to their premises for cleaning but this involves breaking the joint and reattaching can be a problem with the degradation of the joint

A colleague had his 'cleaned' on a Mondeo. it was good for about 2 weeks and then needed replacing, cost about £500.

The ash which builds up in the narrow DPF channels (narrower than a drinking straw) is hard as concrete. I'm not convinced any cleaning will be 100% effective.

Cleaning is often quite successful. However, it won't work if you don't fix whatever issue caused it to block up in the first place.

Wasn’t O Riley the builder who was always causing mayhem at Fawlty Towers ?

AIUI, commercial vehicles DPFs can be cleaned successfully, not so with passenger vehicles.
