My 99 Mondeo Zetec(1.8) started a light rattle apparently within the exhaust system. My local Ford dealer says it needs a new cat at an all-in cost of £279.How does the price sound and should a 4 year old car with 67K on the clock need a new cat?

Expensive, but I suppose for a Ford part and Ford labour it isn't too bad. What I would advise is for you to price one up at one of the fast fit type places that specialise in exhausts as most can supply and fit non genuine cats which should work out a bit cheaper. As we all know theoretically cats were supposed to last the lifetime of the car but I have had 2 fail on me and had to have them replaced, (on 2 different cars). If it was my car though I would ignore the noise and wait until it either gets a lot worse or until it fails it MOT on it, because the car that I have now (M-reg) has been rattling for the last couple of years but is still working perfectly.

As a matter of interest did they not check if may be the heat shield is not causing the rattle they sometimes do rattle/vibrate at certain engine revs? just a thought

I'd try the fast fit guys also - The sound is a rattle a bit like gravel / broken glass in the cat.

I had an Escort cat replaced at Kwik Fit a couple of years ago. At the time I believe they were owned by Ford ( not now though )so they were far and away the best price.

Price supplied and fitted with one year warranty £168. The replacement failed after three months , I never did find out why.

It was replaced under warranty without a problem.
