Evening all, I hope you all had a merry Xmas.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of an insurance company that isn't actively engaged in price gouging? I got my renewal quote through and it's pretty much doubled on what I was paying last year despite having no convictions or claims and nor have I moved to a war zone.

Just go on to one of the many comparison websites and run your details through it.

Direct Line are not on the comparison sites, have their own website, there are probably others.

They haven't indulged in the annual large increases that other companies have, so far anyway, i'll know if this happy state of affairs continues in a week or so.

Overall, insurers in the UK (car and home) are losing money at the moment. For every £1 they take in, they’re paying out £1.20 in total for claims and their own running costs.

They’re not the charity sector and need to balance their books, so premiums will rise.

Not just balance books, but make a fat profit. The last few decades have seen a number of shyst..., ahem, entrepreneurs, who have made a substantial fortune out of motor insurance. This is because of the staggering expense of minor accidents and the absurdly generous compensation available for alleged minor sprains and strains from impacts no greater than those available - and presumably desirable - from fairground bumper cars. Cars with so-called 5mph impact resilience can result in a four figure bill at 6mph, as can a small scratch along a couple of doors. The inefficient repair service can result in the absurdly high car hire cost being more than the repair cost, especially if the 'just in time' availability of a part has to wait for a ship to come from the far east via the Cape of Good Hope - ha! Thanks to the current fashion of car bodywork being treated like a delicate work of art, the punter is at the mercy of the repair, car hire and insurance industries which work hand in hand to ensure the huge expenses result in high premiums. I'm old enough to remember being stung by the scandal of Vehicle & General's collapse shortly after making huge profits for its owners.

Mines due at the end of this month. Still too early for me to get exact quotes for the renewal date and I've yet to hear from current insurer Direct Line.

A quick run through options with the Meerkats suggests I'm going to pay a bit more - £340 versus about 290 last year. A few were cheaper than £340 but at that level we're talking AXA, Aviva and other well known outfits.

21-23 days before expiry is the ideal time to get quotes, and accept one of them - according to Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis - as you get closer to expiry the price will start rising.

Son bought a new BMW in November - 300BHP - BMW insurance £420 with

Flow insurance - LV run and owned by Allianz.

Everything is on-line which does not go down well with some.

That’s the company I will be using Falkirk

Insurance is due on our Yaris, looks like it will be just over £300, which is 50% increase on last year,

Tried a few comparison sites and there are some cheaper quotes at just under £300, but by the time extras are added there is little in it.

Flow is no good to us as we need DOC cover.
