No - not my day to day clothing. Yet again a very old topic has reappeared. Is there no software facility to automatically convert a , say, two yr old thread to 'read only'? Or do HJers enjoy such resurrections?

Sometimes resurrects an interesting subject and adds fresh experience and ideas. I say leave it be.

They're usually resurrected for spam purposes, the software probably can't distinguish known posters and prevent new ones from linking.

The underlying software which manages this forum is very ancient.

Hence many tasks which are trivial in other modern forums is difficult here.

Most forums lock threads after a certain time and only admins can unlock them.

Same is true for spams - better detection rate.

I mentioned this to Avant probably three or fours years ago but he felt it might be useful for people to still see old threads. When an old thread is resurrected it's nearly always a spammer. I think it happens less now we delete any suspect accounts at night. When an old thread appears and it's a spammer we remove the nonsense, disable the account and push the thread back to the depths of the forum where it was sleeping.

I do not think we will get any changes to the software, we just have to make the best of what we've got.

Sometimes it can, though quite often it's a prelude to a new spammer plying their trade.

How about after say two years mods add 'OLD THREAD...' to the beginning of the title . Then people who choose to respond might think twice?

We don't have any tools for locating threads 2+ years old so not sure how we can do that prior to a thread being resurrected by a spammer.

90% of the time (maybe more) when an old thread is brought to life then it's a spammer. By the time we've edited the subject thread it's no more time just to delete the spammer's nonsense, delete the account and send the thread back to where it came from. One or two clicks of the mouse does it.

Spam is frustrating for all but if people could not respond to a spammer in a thread then it makes our job a bit easier as to deal with the spammer we have to remove what other people have written as well.

If an old thread that is redundant gets brought back to life by a spammer then we can lock it. For example "Should I buy a Mondeo TDCI or Laguna dCi with my £20k car allowance"? Or whatever they cost back in 2004. However, this may not achieve anything as they will spam another unlocked thread.

At least all that automated nonsense seems to have stopped. How's that for tempting fate...

Sorry, I guess my (less than sympathetic) response to an op prompted this thread!

And we get canned pork products.

Quoting earlier posts before orb left it seems as if the mods have enough on their plates without locking 2 yr old threads...

Sorry. Slept in this morning , so it escaped the net for a short while!!!
