Volvo C70 - Volvo C70 MK1 Cabrio-a worthwhile buy? - Alfred Rees-Glinos

Hi all. A friend has offered me his Mk1 2004 2.0T petrol Volvo C70 cabrio for free. He bought it as a weekend car, but has decided it's too big. The car has about 65k miles (MOT history indicates this as genuine), and the roof works. The service history is patchy at best, but my friend had it fully serviced after purchase and had a new cambelt fitted. I appreciate fuel economy hovers around 30, but I don't drive much. On previous MOTs. it has only failed on tyres, never on corrosion. What are your thoughts on this car-be honest! What do I need to look out for? Are these relatively dependable cars? I have read of electronic throttle module (ETM) issues with the C70, but from what I can gather, this only affects cars up to 2002. Thanks in advance, Alfie.

It's a free car, what have you got to lose? I think this has the 5 cylinder engine. Cambelt been replaced is a big plus.

Think that only the 2.5's were 5 cylinder.

But since its free even if it failed within days you would make money either on parts or sc*** value.

Good old solid durable Volvo. Not much to worry about . If it’s free , then worth a punt . I would check the ved rate . Parts can be very expensive on the coupe/ cabriolet models .

I'd bite his arm off, what a grand old cruiser to have. The 5-pot Volvo engine is a peach, and in 2 litre form is very understressed. Earmark £1000 or so for unexpected repairs (there will always be something that crops up on any 10+ year old car) but as it's had the cambelt done the engine should be fine for several years.

Not quite sure what the question is? If it's a dog sc*** it which will still be a few hundred quid.

I think throttle was sorted by 2004 and they are solid old buses - more so than the next generation Volvo,. Somewhere under there is an 850.

They can suffer with old car stuff (heater matrixes are a common weakness) but little which is not fixable.

No brainer. Barely run in. On a sunny dry day next year go underneath with a wire brush and a pot of rust inhibitor to deal with any incipient (or established) corrosion.

Even if you have to spend a few quid it's a bargain, I always liked that model.
