Hi all, I have a 15 plate Peugeot 308sw 1.6 blue hdi. Been a good car, loved driving it, but it's done 110k miles now and thinking its time to look for something different.

Hoping people on here can recommend something reliable for around the 13k mark. Looked at Astra's and Kadjar's but not sure about reliability on them. Will be a family car (2 kids) with a reasonable boot.

Thanks all for your help.

You’ve been lucky with that Peugeot, most of their recent products have a poor reputation for long term reliability sadly. Which is a shame, I used to really like their offerings in the past. I wouldn’t recommend another one, or its stablemates from Citroen.

What sort of usage will it see, is it mostly local driving or will there be regular longer runs? What roughly will your annual mileage be?

I’d remove the Astra and Kadjar along with its relative the Nissan Qashqai from your shortlist if reliability is important, none of them are strong on that front.

Lastly, where roughly will you be looking? We can recommend cars all day long, but it’s of no use if none are available nearby. Buying a car from a great distance can be a real pain of anything goes wrong and you need to return it to them for repairs.

Thanks a lot for your reply and recommendations. It would be mainly local journeys altho some long runs occasionally. Probably 10k miles a year. The South/West Yorkshire area and then maybe south as far as Mansfield/north notts way.

I had a wee look at Toyota Auris Hybrids, but they’re fetching stupid money as taxi fleets chase every one that comes up. The 1.2 turbo petrol is nearly as economical on a run and costs thousands less. They are a bit dated, but they’re tough as old boots.

I did see this Honda Civic 1.6 diesel. This is the only modern diesel I’ll recommend to anyone, most suffer too many issues related to emissions control equipment to save any real money over a less complex petrol model, but in this shape of Civic it’s the one to have. Don’t touch the 1.0 petrol turbo, these need a hugely costly timing belt change every 5yrs and any you look at won’t have had it done. The diesel doesn’t have a timing belt, and will do 70mpg on a run.

Hi. A Skoda Scala should be a safe choice (reliability wise). The 1.0 TSi engine is well regarded (if you go for the 110/.115BHP you get 6 gears vs 5 for the 95BHP).

A couple of examples (within your budget).

That sort of budget will get you into a Suzuki vitara . Stick with a 1.6 petrol.

The manufacturers warranty for this Kia Ceed estate being sold by a main dealer (on Autotrader) lasts until 2028.

Just be aware that to ensure Kia honours a warranty claim, you need to ensure any other car you are looking at has a main dealer history. Otherwise they (Kia) will probably try to wriggle out of their obligations.
