Skoda Scala - swansea_karl

Hi all, i have had my Scala for 3 weeks now. I am wondering why there are so few around. I narrowed it down to a Scala or Astra. I thought the Scala was a different choice, as ive always had Vauxhalls. Anyone else own a Scala? What are your opinions of it? I know Skodas share many parts with the Volkswagen Group, some say the Scala has the same chassis as a Golf? If it lasts as well as my trusty 2010 Astra i will be more than happy.

I suppose it's partly because it's not an SUV/cross over where the bigger sales are these days and it's still quite a new car as well - think they came out in 2019. Personally I do like the look of them and they seem a very decent car for the money.

Skoda's do indeed share parts with VAG, because they are part of said group (and have been for over 30 years now)!

Yes and no. The original MQB platform was just one platform, but the current version has a few variations. So while both Golf and Scala use the MQB platform, the Scala uses MQB AO, whereas the Golf uses MQB Evo.

They are not a bargain, that’s one reason why you don’t see many

If Skoda went back to being a budget brand the Scala would be ideal to push out at £15,995 upwards

Don't agree. Compared to other similar sized cars they are more than competitive, when we were looking back in August they were no more expensive than the same spec Fabia.

IMHO the only reason you don't see more is the styling, its visually pretty much identical to the r****** Rapid that pre-dated it. The Scala has excellent spec, excellent space and quality materials, the Rapid had none of these.

When we bought the Fabia almost 6 years ago we considered a Rapid since they looked better value. The salesman advised against getting and a quick look at one confirmed that there were reasons for the low price.

People are snobs, and in unexpected ways. I've never driven a Scala, but I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it. The Rapid before it was an equally good proposition; it had some cheap interior plastics and a slightly unsettled ride, but was otherwise every bit as good as its competitors (many of which felt equally cheap). Nobody bought it because it looked like a skinny saloon. The same is true of the current Fiat Tipo; a very good and robust car but incredibly rare in the UK because it says Fiat on it. The same people will gladly buy a Citroen, Peugeot or Vauxhall, all of which are made by exactly the same company.

I think sometimes manufacturers release these better value models but don't want to tarnish 'the brand' in the UK. Skoda have spent millions moving themselves upmarket so to heavily advertise a car that is perfectly good but has a lower price that their other models makes little sense. It's like they hide them, but have them available in case somebody who just wants a car walks in.

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, but wanted to add my 2 cents of ownership of a Scala for a few weeks. We bought a brand new one (basically because the 0% PCP worked out quite nicely for where we were at). It was the 1.5 petrol SE-L as it was the only one in the dealership. Would have liked the 1.0L, and it would have been a better value deal, but hey ho, at least the car has plenty of poke. We are a family of five and we find that the space is brilliant. We can all comfortably go out together on day trips with plenty of space in the boot for gear. The kids in the back all report it is more comfortable and they have more useable space than our outgoing Qashqai. The engine has plenty of power and we are pushing an average of around 48mpg.

I recently bought a used Mazda 6 for the longer trips and UK holidays (as well as to be a general second car), but I'd say the Scala would cope with most of our family life.

It has far too much snazzy tech for my liking, but I guess that is par for the course with a 2023 registered car! We like it, and we really hope to keep it going until the government finally decide they want petrol cars off the road!

Is it a plush as a fancy Golf? Maybe not. Is it a great car for family life. Definitely.
