Welcome to your new moderator - Xileno

Following the resignation of ORB, a new moderator is joining the happy team in order to spread the load.

Firstly many thanks to all those who volunteered, it is greatly appreciated and also recognised that there is significant interest in keeping the Backroom running, far greater than I (or ORB before he resigned) realised. In the end we went through the list in the order the emails came in, looking for the first volunteer who we felt would maintain the atmosphere of the Backroom - trying to keep discussions civilised but without being too heavy-handed. I believe we get that balance right the majority of the time and it seems to suit the profile of the forum.

I hope you will welcome 'Leaseman" to the dark side. He has been a member since 2010 and am sure will introduce himself in due course.

Quite a lot of work goes on invisibly behind the scenes to keep the forum running smoothly and 'Leaseman' is starting off as Spam Zapper, removing spam and disabling accounts. Hopefully this will result in a reduction in the rubbish we often see on the forums because I don't have time to check in all the day. Disabling suspect accounts last thing at night seems to be reducing the amount of spam hitting the forum in the early hours, clearly originating from different time zones.

ps, as with all new moderators, please be patient for a while as mistakes will happen, the software has its oddities to catch you out.

Thanks to Leaseman and of course you Xileno for volunteering to do this important work for us. Much appreciated.

Welcome to your new moderator - Maxime.

It is good to see a continuation and that the forum can and will continue.

This is one of the forums I enjoy most, and also 99.9% of the time the most polite, so excepting a recent glitch, Long may it continue.

Xileno, do you have news of Orb I am sure we all wish him well in his retirement and hopefully will return one day to contribute.

Best of luck dealing with this unruly mob, I think you'll need a skin like a rhinoceros!

Thank you.

Welcome to your new moderator - leaseman

Thank you Xileno and the contributors for your welcome.

As my “nom de plume” suggests, my main forte has been in the financing and leasing of vehicle and plant in the private and corporate sectors.

My career has spanned Banking and Finance at a national level through to General Management of franchised motor dealerships and Contract Hire companies.

A born and bred Yorkshireman, outside work, I enjoy all sport, representing my City at Basketball many years ago and qualifying as a Basketball referee and an MCC accredited Cricket coach (the combination of which should, hopefully, assist me in the moderation of the fast-moving life of this Forum

First vehicles owned: Lambretta Li 150 followed by a Heinkel bubble car, a TriBSA 650 cc motorbike and graduating to a Standard Vanguard Estate.

Best motoring experience: A blow-out in the outside lane of the M6 with 5 up in a Citroen CX.

Worst motoring experience: A Lada Riva stretched limo.

Most iconic motoring Hero: The late, great, John Cooper.

I am looking forward to assisting Xileno with the job I’m now entrusted with, and, from what I’ve already seen in a matter of a few days, I need to be on a fast learning curve! And I trust that I can provide the level of service so well deserved by the vast majority of knowledgeable and expert posters that I continue to admire and learn from – even at my age!

Thanks for stepping forward.

Good to see you on board.

Many thanks to you leaseman for stepping up to assist Xeleno with this demanding role.

Looking at your motoring ownerships I’d guess that you started driving in the mid sixties ?

But it would be interesting to see your list of car ownerships culminating in your present fleet ?

Welcome to your new moderator - leaseman

Thank you Steveieb.

The list of Company cars, Demonstrator cars and Motor trade cars that I've had the "pleasure" to drive over many years would fill too many column inches.

They include most of everything, including a Sierra Cosworth which I took home for one night and refused to drive again after waking up the next morning and finding too many footprints in the snow on my drive to count. Having a family to consider, I put them first and was very careful thereafter to take "sensible" cars home!

Text today from ORB:

"Eye op went well but strictly limited screen time. Had more eye problems this week so new specs again. Hopefully will settle. Ordered 4th set of glasses today"

Welcome to your new moderator - KB.

Good wishes to the outgoing ORB and the incoming Leaseman.

(Lease and PCP versus buying outright has never seemed an easy decision to me. Maybe Leaseman will be the man to ask when the occasion arises.)

Welcome to your new moderator - expat

Welcome and thanks for contributing your time and knowledge.

Thanks also to ORB. Hope his eye trouble clears up soon. I can empathise with him as I am on a course of eye injections.

Thanks to all new, former and current moderator(s).

I need my weekly fix of peace and sanity..

"Lease and PCP versus buying outright has never seemed an easy decision to me."

I have to make such a decision nowadays too KB.

I could write a book on the subject, but in my experience of advising over the years, the only golden rule that people follow is "How much a month?" Just over 2 years ago I opted for Personal Contract Hire (PCH), but I had the advantage of knowing the right people to get the best deal. The way that residual used car values have risen since then still begs the question whether I did right or not! I'll be more in the know next year- but hindsight is not informative of the future.

There are some pointers that I can suggest......how long have I got??

Welcome to your new moderator - KB.

You've got all the time in the world :-)

The circumstances you've outlined regarding your own situation seems to reinforce the uncertainty which abounds.

My current wheels are both 12 years old and low mileage.

I'm 72 and it's possible I may not last for ever.

I can afford to buy outright if the need arose and it it was beneficial.

Interest rates have gone up but are coming down.

Both new and used prices have rocketed.

Electric may - or may not - be the future.

.............plus a load more factors I will inevitably have failed to mention.

I can definitely sympathise whenever someone like yourself says it's a minefield and without the benefit of a crystal ball it's difficult to offer advice.

I currently have two schools of thought ... (a) buy a new Dacia outright and hope that choosing a cheap Renault isn't the bad idea that it sounds like.

or (b) pay the extra and get a Toyota and feel all smug and complacent but slightly uncertain whether I should have leased it instead.

Welcome to your new moderator - Big John

Welcome Leaseman and many thanks to ORB.

Interesting discussion re PCH / PCP etc. I've historically tried to buy cheaper new / nearly new usually end of a model (cheaper / well sorted) as I did a very high annual mileage - and then throw away (well sell very cheap) after 10 years. This has effectively kept my capital costs well under £100/month over many decades. I suspect those days are over.

However now I've retired, annual mileage has dropped substantially and current purchase prices new/used are bonkers who knows what I'll do next? For now my last "cheap" car bought in 2015 is still in excellent order.
