We are currently deluged/submerged by robot registrations for the forum. There are too many for us to cope with anymore It is overwhelming.

As fast as we disable accounts more appear.

Expect a DNA attack soon?

ORB as a poster and ORB as a MOD>

Cant the forum just post a big warning message & just block all new accounts for a while until the bot attack stops?

Or going forward have a new users first couple of posts approved by a mod?

Stop automatic creation of threads for new registrations unless mods approve the posts?

Most new forums don't allow automatic postings from new registrations.

We only have the option to disable or spam new posters.

It is a PITP.

We can't do that either.

Maybe you can't but does the forum administrator possibly not have more settings available than the moderators?

For some reason this site has a vulnerability to spam and other stuff I'm not aware of on any other forum.

Surely there must be a solution, even if it costs money?

Plenty of technical solutions available. Budgets, business priorities etc.

Is there a captcha type system where people have to click on the images to find a bicycle for example? It has been a while since I joined so can't remember if it's alreayd in place. If not, things like that might help.

Are the requests from the same location- Possible temporary firewall rule? Not always possible with IP spoofing etc.

Seems like this forum software is very old one and hence does not offer out of the box spam protection features which most other latest forums software do.

If upgrade is not an option then probably not much automated protection.

We will plod along best we can, there are 80 new registrations today. Some might be genuine but many are not. Some clearly bots. I've killed off a few but it takes too long.

AI isn`t helping as that in itself is able to bypass any defence put up, and can work faster than a human, so the fact the software maybe out of date is not going to make a great deal of difference...

Without trying to sound mean.

If this was a business it would just go under.

Keep up or die, as they say. Everything needs a little investment, to keep ticking over.

What would folk do if this site died?

They would find another, as good or better site, and quickly forget.

Pull your socks up Honestjohn!

The site seems to have atrophied since the demise of the original HJ,

News very rarely updated as well as intemittent answers on ask HJ

Not confident gor the future.

AI can be good but it's simply not true it can get past any defences that are put up...the old software the form uses is clearly making the problem a lot worse - sadly I don't expect there is much that can be done without some time and money being paid which looking at the site over the last few years I can't see that happening.

I've been saying this for ages now. I suspect because the forum doesn't really earn any money for the site owners, at least as it might've done a decade or so ago when it was busier and actually attracted people to the website more generally, they don't want to spend the money upgrading it.

The News and Reviews section (even accounting for the drop in new cars released to market during the Pandemic times) is a pale shadow of its former self - many 'articles' are re-ups (like the Telegraph's motoring, ahem 'Cars' section) and, in my view, near copies of those on the owners' own site.

I'm currently getting a similar vibe as was the case for many (now gone) forums (across many subjects ones) from the early to mid 2000s - especially the increasing prevelence of fake accounts and spam the moderators and IT people had to deal with, plus decreasing popularity amongst younger users. Many motoring owners' forums are now going the same way.

A short note to add.

I had cataract surgery earlier in the week and can just about cope with writing this.

Xileno has been grat to work with and diigent in his replies.

I'll be absent for a while but hope to contribute positively in the future.

One of the benefits of the surgery is that YRG is having to drive herself aroun and now walks to work. LOL>>>

Yes, it doesn't bode well, but sincere thanks to the mods, current and past for keeping this place going. The advice has (nearly) always been helpful over the years and it will be a sad day when/if it finally goes under. Weird that phase a few years back when spammers were always trying to flog us K*I*T*C*H*E*N*s!

I've just killed off about thirty suspect accounts, clearly created by bots. I can understand spammers wanting to create posts with links but most of these just go on to create text. Some AI text, they are easy to spot as the posts are very 'mechanical'. You would think they might give up, they will get deleted at some point even if they get a few hours on the forum.

ANY Answers? - Bot accounts created. - Engineer Andy

Is there a way for HJ to introduce those pop-up 'find the X in the windows' (e.g. all the motorbikes (or parts thereof, etc) which may go some way to stop the bots getting an account?

I suppose it depends on how advanced the AIs get and how much are their 'handlers' willing to spend time going through proverbial hoops in order to get an account.

ANY Answers? - Bot accounts created. - Xileno

That's one option that would help. Any change to the software takes time to code and test, unfortunately I don't think the Backroom is that high up the list of priorities. Deleting dodgy registrations lat thing at night certainly seems to help and I will continue to do that.

Bots don't give up because they just blindly attack any and every vulnerable site in vast numbers. A tiny percentage of successes is sufficient to satisfy their masters.

The vast majority of forums have no such problem because they use software which protects them. This forum appears to use an antiquated system with no protection except the voluntary efforts of you and _orb_. In fact many commercial sites work very well with free software such as WordPress and its forum plugins. Developing a site with it is not free of course so the status quo is the cheap option whilst you and _orb_ provide spam protection services for nothing.

Tangential but related.

I've been partly involved with teaching academic (particularly scientific) writing for the past few years, but stopped (apart from a bit of proof reading) recently, apparently in the nick of time.

Apparently (havn't tried it) when students use ChatGPT for their literature survey, it makes up convincing looking but fictitious citations/references.

So they've invented a solid state lying little scumbag.

Presumably the supply of flesh and blood lying little scumbags was felt to be inadequate, though you could have fooled me

Thats...er...progression.
