Citroen C4 Cactus - Pure Tech 1.2 engine cambelt - bob ewens

I am replying to a question from Mr Richard Sylvester on the 7th of September in which he asked about the manufacturer recall due to cambelt failures.

My car had to have the cambelt and many associated parts replaced under the Citroen manufacturer under warranty. I will say that they had to rebuild a lot of the engine and replace many of the internal parts to make sure the cambelt particles which had started to disintegrate were flushed out. This work cost them £2000 in parts and about £1200 in labour. Unless all of that work is done properly I would not advise buying one without that documented history. I should say also that the later models were not recalled but I don't know what the cut off chassis numbers are.

Im told the cut off for the improved 3rd belt revision on this engine was the end of 2019/start of 2020 but that is not official conformation.
The advice i was given was to buy a 70 plate onwards with this engine to make sure, but there is a chance a pre 2020 built car may not have sold and sat in a compound waiting to be registered.

Citroen dealers can tell from their system the actual build date of a car, they may be able to get the actual engine build date.

I wouldn't be encouraging anyone to buy a 1.2 Purec*** powered vehicle.

Even with the multiple belt revisions ( generation 4 belt was last I heard a couple of years back ) I'm sure more new headaches for owners will manifest in the near future.

Don't forget the oil consumption & carbon fouling issues the Purec*** is known for.
