Fiat Punto - I need tips on cleaning the car trunk - Daniele Spider

Hi guys, first of all sorry for my not perfect English.

About 1 year ago I bought an used Fiat Punto and I always noticed some dirtness in the trunk, on the plastic part which separates the back seats from the trunk itself (here's an image to let you better understand: ibb.co/JqFwWY5). I decided to clean it.

I was wondering, what can I use to try to remove that "scratches" you see in the picture from the black "plastic" (not even sure it's actually plastic)? I was thinking of using a microfiber cloth wet with water, then using another dry microfiber cloth to dry the zone, but I'm not sure if this is gonna do any damages, as I said before I don't even know if it's actually plastic or maybe metal or something.

What do you think about it? I really want to clean that part of the trunk.

It's (normally) metal. If it upset me, I would paint it with black hammerite.

Not 100% sure, but I think it will be metal rather than plastic. The very visible marks will be scratches through the black paint showing the bare metal underneath.

Best thing would be to repaint it using an aerosol tin of satin black. Might be feasible to do it with the seat still fitted, but would be a bit of a hassle making sure to contain any overspray. For that reason I'd probably remove it. Looking at the pic, you'd need to remove the hinge bracket bolts either side. Before painting it, at the very least you should clean the black surface with thinners or an alcohol cleaner. But you could give it a rub down with some fine sandpaper (before cleaning).

Thanks for the answers. I don't think I would be able to paint it properly, I'm not very handy with this kind of jobs. Even if it's metal, what if I try to clean it with water wet microfiber cloth? Could I damage the metal itself, or is there a risk of it rusting? And what about the back seats, are they protected from the water by the metal? I would like to try at least to clean, because other than the scratches there's some dust and minor imperfections, so if you tell me that water ain't dangerous for the metal itself or the back seats I try to clean it as much as possible.

I don't think you'll do any significant damage as long as you don't totally soak it.

In all honesty, I'd just leave it. You could spend ages trying to tidy it up and you'll scratch it again the first time you put something sharp in there.

As above, if you don't feel able to paint it, just leave it as is. Having looked at the picture again, I think there are both scratches and something, possibly paint, on the surface (most noticeably on the bottom right corner).

But I would add that I don't see much point in cleaning it with just water. If you are going to clean it, spray on some general all purpose household cleaner first (but to be clear, that isn't going to remove paint, if that's what it is)

You could try some 'colour magic' polish, black obviously!, water and a cloth will remove the dust etc but that's about it.

Must admit those marks would bother me, I'm a bit of a clean freak tbh.

BBD's suggestion of painting it would be my way of dealing with it, be a nice Sunday morning job.

Many years ago I had a hatch with metal backs to the seats. To stop stuff rattling I stuck some carpet to the metal with contact adhesive. That would hide the existing scratches and prevent it happening again.
