As above. What are they like to live with?

Real life MPG?

Are they much better than Audi these days?

Would I be better getting the 2 litre C class 300d, lots of power with good mpg.

But not a smooth V6.

I'm in an A7 Quattro at the moment and quite happy, is it worth the change?

Many questions!

Anyone?

Thanks.

Try all the cars you are considering and base your decision on that, its your money and you will have to live with your final choice. What one person likes another doesn't but what matters is what you like/want.

As above, drive the E Class to see how you find it.

Judging by the examples of both E-Class and A7 I see on the road, massive wheels with ultra low profile tyres is what most appear to want.

Both cars quite a long way from my own "cup of tea", but if I was to buy something along those lines, I'd be placing comfort in front of image. So a car on wheels of a more modest diameter and tyres with a taller sidewall would be preferable. Better for dealing with the UK's third world road surfaces, (invariably) cheaper to replace and better economy (slightly) are added bonuses.

I have recently taken over a 2007 E320 D Estate facelift model and I’m really liking it.

The V6 engine and auto box are so smooth and not having any complex emissions stuff was a great feature .

The Hardin Kar ? Audio system with auto changer suits me and the opening sunroof is a useful feature.

So lucky to have a brilliant Mercedes specialist at Rushden near me which is essential to cope with unexpected failures which are not covered by my local indie .

I really like the raised rear seats which make travelling in the back a pleasure .

168 k covered and failures with the front suspension three years ago and air suspension needed attention from the specialist otherwise full service and MOT.

Crikey!

Skidpan, in an idea world I would just get a one month test drive on both cars.

But we aren't in an ideal world.

So you haven't really said anything I didn't know, hence my original question.

But thank you.

badbusdriver, not your cup of tea. They have big wheels.

Well thanks for those two Golden Nuggets!

Again, thank you.

Steveieb, thank you for an honest and factual write up.

The 2.0 litres performance is very close to the 3.0 litres today, but I do like the 'creamy' and quiet V6 engine.

Also, the V6 is an old, but trusted unit, not so sure about the newer 2.0 and 2.1?

I'll keep looking and asking for a little while.

I know we cannot get a one month test drive, not daft enough to even consider that. But a short test drive will tell you far more about a car with regards to your personal needs/wants/opinions than that of a forum collective whose needs/wants/opinions will be different to yours.

badbusdriver, not your cup of tea. They have big wheels.

I also prefer to avoid low profile tyres where possible. But if you like the looks of an inch of rubber instead of a nice comfy taller tyre profile go for it.

Just remember, when you are in the car you cannot see those fancy wheels and tyres but you are very aware of the spine crashing ride.

But I've been in the A7 Quattro for 4 years. It's a very comfortable car. Your assuming all models have 20/21" wheels, they don't. Also note, when cornering at speed, that inch of rubber eliminates any roll.

These cars have air suspension, the ultimate comfort ride. A computer sets the ride for your preferred drive. Comfort/Dynamic/Auto.

You really don't know the facts here, and again are using terms like "I also prefer'.

I'm guessing you get your facts from other people's opinions?

If I asked for opinions on a public forum, I would not make sarcastic remarks when I do not like them.

Nobody is assuming anything of the sort. It was me who said most of the examples I see have huge wheels on ultra low profile tyres, because that is the case. But that is not the same as saying all cars have them.

Also note, when cornering at speed, that inch of rubber eliminates any roll.

No, the profile of the tyres have very very little to do with roll, that is the job of the suspension. Ultra low profile tyres simply reduce the amount of movement between wheel and road.

I'm guessing you get your facts from other people's opinions?

Funny, given that is exactly what you are asking for.

You really don't know the facts here, and again are using terms like "I also prefer'.

This is a motoring forum and as such comments and discussion, which don't necessarily relate directly to the question, are inevitable and not usually not met with such open criticism and sarcasm. If you only want opinions of owners, then the obvious course of action would be to look up owners reviews on the relevant cars. This is very easy to do on this website, Autotrader, Parkers and a few others.

Chaps, I am not sure if the OPs enquiry is genuine..

The OP is a frequent contributor in the Technical forum, seems a fair thread to raise but a bit more diplomacy towards those who have made the effort to reply would be appreciated.

When I buy a car (like I am currently in the process of) I get my facts for looking and driving the vehicles and reading the manufacturers data.

The last place I would get my facts from is other peoples opinions. That would be a recipe for disaster.

Remember that its your car and what other people think of it is irrelevant if you are happy.

Gentlemen.

I never used the word opinion.

Don't make stuff up.

The first Test Drive is booked.

Thank you for your time

You literally asked six questions in your original post.

In answering the questions, people are obviously going to give
you their opinion:

Or did you want them to make stuff up?
Mercedes Benz E350d - Anyone running one of these? - mickyh7

I just wanted some truthful answers.

Not anyones 'opinions'.

Someone even had the audacity to tell me how uncomfortable my own car is!

No, I didn't want anyone to make things up, but they did!

This is getting a bit tedious. This is a Discussion forum, a range of views will be offered that may or may not directly answer the issues you raise. You can just filter through and focus on the replies you consider most relevant.

Good news about the test drive. Maybe this thread is best left with the anticipation that you will update us with your findings.

After a lengthy test drive I came to the conclusion that the Merc was too similar to the Audi.

I then test drove a C class 300d coupe, which I really liked.

Smaller engine, 2.0 litre, but similar power, performance etc. But very comfortable.

Feels like the same amount of space inside to me.

Lots more mpg and ULEZ compliant.

Deal done, pick it up Monday, a really convenient, and painless but fair, part exchange, with one of the big internet car companies.

Thank you all for your input.

C300d coupe - nice choice, good looking car. If you're fussy about your cars then having bought from an internet seller, I would strongly recomend getting it booked in to your local MB main dealer for a health check. You can go with a free health check or pay a couple of hundred and get a proper inspection - this will reveal any issues on which you can then go back (in time) to the seller.

That sounds like a very good plan.
