We go on holiday on Saturday, flying into Malaga airport. We booked a Jet2 Villas package deal, which includes car hire - all booked via Hays Travel.

Picked up the paperwork yesterday and discover the car hire is through OK Mobility. "Let's have a quick look at Trustpilot", I thinks to myself. Oh my word. The feedback is truly awful. It seems if you refuse their insurance and pay the €1350 credit card deposit instead (as I planned to; buying an excess insurance policy in readiness), they simply find 'new' damage and charge ludicrous amounts from the deposit.

Wish I'd have had a choice of car hire company. This could be interesting...

Take you own photos of the car, date stamped and clearly at the office before you even enter the car, And preferably with an employee of the company in them.

The only people who make these complaints are those who had a problem.

Unless you know how many got their deposits back as they should the numbers with issues don't mean a lot.

Jet2 have their own reputation to protect and if I'd booked through them I'd expect some help, and push>shove liability to land with them for any shadiness.

I contribute from time to time on TripAdvisor, particularly on the Canary Islands forums.

Enquiries about car hire are a frequent topic. The advice usually given is: (1) always book direct, in advance, with a reputable company - two or three are usually recommended; (2) avoid XXX - a particularly bad company operating in the Canaries; (3) never go through a broker, comparison website or airline, because you don't know who you will end up dealing with - and it could be XXX.

Sorry - I realise this doesn't help in your situation, but maybe next time...

Are you saying car hire included but you have to take insurance as extra, so what is the cost difference to take out their insurance for perhaps more peace of mind, Still obviously checking the car beforehand with pics as necessary. Or clear any concerns you have with the company before travel

The car hire includes the basic legally required insurance, the extra that is sold at the time of hiring is, I assume, the 'comprehensive' option. I don't know how much it will be, but from memory of previous hires with other companies is about €30-€40 a day. I suppose you're right- it may just be easier paying that than risking the €1350 deposit and the faff of claiming back on the excess insurance, especially as many report the inability to get required documentation from OK Mobility.

I appreciate those who have a negative experience are more likely to shout up, but the difference between OK Mobility and other rental companies appears to be quite stark.

I'll be checking as thoroughly as being in a dimly lit carpark and having two children in tow will allow!

Interesting. Berlingo for 7 days is €272. Any extra insurances once you go to collect?

You need to read the smallprint regarding the relationship between Jet2 and the car hire company and your booking and what is and isn't included. Also have the Jet2 contact number handy if things don't look right when picki g up, a threat to call Jet2 may be enough for attitudes to change.

Its a few years since I booked a hire car in Europe but I generally use Zest. UK based, fully insured and after 5-6 hires no problems, including one where the car was returned damaged thanks to somone driving into it while parked.

It's common going on universal for included comprehensive cover to have a significant excess and significant exclusions. Think excess of E500-1000 and glass, tyres etc excluded.

The hire companies then want to sell you additional cover for these excesses. They're pretty well always cheaper to buy when you book rather than at the desk. Cheaper by magnitude is to buy insurance for car hire excess in the UK directly from an insurer.

If you do that and decline their cover make sure you've enough available on a card for them to pre-authorise a deposit for the excess etc.

We had a little bit of hassle over that hiring on Madeira in April. We'd pre-insured as above. Hirer's desk rep tried to tell me I couldn't insure their car as I didn't own it. I pointed out it wasn't their car I was insuring but my liability! It was all quite pleasant - a sort of sporting joust! .She was training a new staff member and maybe gave us the full spiel.

The other weirdness was that they tried to tell me the 'small Eurobox' type car I'd ordered wasn't really suitable on account of the Madeira's mountainous terrain. I should consider paying more for something with more power. Declined and oddly enough the 120PS Citroen went up the hills rat>drainpipe style.

Which reminds me, A few years ago I pre-booked a car at JFK with a large worldwide company. Got there and offered an upgrade for a"special" price. Declined partly because of the "extras" associated with it. Eventually was given some big limo and asked for the excess premium . Declined and when told couldn't have the car, got my phone out and called my travel agent to cancel the rental contract as my car not available andwas being pushed to pay extra for a car I didn't really want, (not a compact but a luxobarge).

Would wait while they contacted that companies head office for me.

2 minutes later my compact arrived.

Always be prepared to call their bluff.

Also did it in Italy before lockdown, Car hire rates very cheap. Didn't want to pay stupid money for this and that excess. Said ok thank you, Keep your car and walked. Car was hired through a comparison site and the daily rate was cheap. (I lost a bit) but they lost the extras they wanted me to pay.

For those who are interested...

For reasons I won't go into here, for fear of naming and shaming, I will never go anywhere near OK Mobility again.

As you were...

I always do a video when hiring a car or taking one out for a test drive. Last week a thoroughly unpleasant dealer insisted I don't do a video before taking the car out, so I did an extra detailed one, showing all the issues I could see outside and in.

The deposit preauthorisation has finally been removed, and after several back and forward messages over Facebook chat, I've had a refund of the double charged insurance. They're refusing to refund the refueling charge, even though I returned it full.

Never again. That Trustpilot rating of 1 is well deserved, IMHO.

Can you sue jet2villas in the small claims court?

I'm not sure it's worth it over €80, although there is the principle.

Partly my fault. After a flight with two children I just wanted the car. The representative was high pressure, to say the least. Didn't give me chance to review the documents before signing and, in my opinion, must've known I was being double charged for insurance and had other extras added. I was told the documents were to be emailed to me - they never arrived. On returning the car, I found out they'd been emailed to hotmial.com, not hotmail.com. Convenient, huh.

Anyhoo, I live and learn.
