heated rear window wire - Escort Mk4 - mfarrow
Hi

My heated rear window has been getting slow over winter, and has not packed up! I'm trying to replace the feed wire that goes between the tailgate and the body.

I've taken the plastic cover off that runs up the inside of the pillar, only to find solid metal underneath! I don't want to attack the rubber hose that keeps the wires weatherproof as I'm worried it will split.

Any help appreciated.

are you sure its the window slowing and not your car leaking now winter/rain etc is here
have u got a pollen filter is it new
if not just throw it away (replace in summer if pollen bothers you)

No pollen filter. The cable between the tailgate and the body is getting warm, hence this is what is suspect. Heated mirrors work OK and the switch light comes on.

I don't leave it on all the time, switch is on relayed timer and goes off with ignition. Rear wiper/screen wash work OK so I've ruled the earth out. Wires were replaced a few years ago by non-ford garage, just wondering how he got to them :-).

I had a similar problem on my pug 306, replaced feed wire and all was well after that. I suspect the wire had either fused along route (possibly contacting body). Had to re-run a new feed wire (capabale of carrying 30A, available from Halfords) from relay to rear-demister.

To diagnose the problem, you should measure the resistance of the feed wire between the relay output and the disconnected positive end which feeds the rear demister element.
Anything more than a few ohms is suspect.

Hi

Finally replaced just the section of wire that goes from the body to the tailgate and all is well again! Definately broken through, the cable was "floppy" where it had been kinked so much. solara: Thanks for the multimeter suggestion. Couldn't really measure it as the relay output goes to the switch light and heated mirrors as well!

Cheers.
