Thanks. I tried getting a quote for just stepson - had to add my wife because only provisional license - came to £2360.40. Might try wife with stepson as named driver later when/if site speeds up.

We went through this last year for our 19 year old new driver.
For us, the cheapest way was for me to buy the car and register it, policy in my name, with daughter named as *main driver* (v important, no intention to cloud the facts there)
Some insurers say that the main driver has to be the owner, but often if you ring up, rather than get a quote on line, you can sort that out, especially if there's a parental relationship between the parties (i.e. on line quotes are less flexible)
Insurance obviously varies so hugely, I can only tell you what worked in our case - we found having both myself and her father on the policy (rather than just one of us) brought the cost down (more experienced drivers on the policy will lower the price with some companies)
I reckoned that as we were paying the premium we needed the best price - she can start saving up an NCD when she's paying for it herself (by which time she'll be over 21 probably and have at least a couple or three years having driven as a named driver, which should help, so long as she remains accident etc. free)
For this policy the best price was from Tesco.
Oh and one other thing - part time occupations often have a big effect on the premium with some companies, especially if it's bar/hotel work.

Thanks for the info.

Liverpool Victoria (www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk ) or Frizzell (same company) are usually good for new drivers.

Firstly it is usual for an insurance company to insist the policy is in the name of the Owner so it will have to be in your wifes name. Your son will benefit from passing his test and immediatlely taking the "Pass Plus" which can safe him 25 to 30% and give him one years no claims when the car is in his name. Do not forget that if you insure him as a provisional and he passes his test you must tell the insurance immediately i.e. before he drives on his own. Some campanies are good for provisionals but will not or are very expensive for 17/18 year old new drivers. Or you same all that money leave the car in the drive and use your local Arnold Clarks and the like Learners hire car with dual controls at about £11 and hour. Regards Peter

Do I understand this correctly Peter D. Some hire car companies have vehicles with dual controls and they would allow me to take my 19 year old son out (driving) in it for approximately £11.00 an hour? If so, are there any other companies that you know of in the Leeds area?

Yes that is correct. This is how I taught my daugther to drive. I do not know about leeds but a few phone call to some garage chains should find one. I am not talking about Hetx and Avis here but garages that hire cards, Arnold Clark up does and one of the main Vauxall and Ford garages does. Good Luck Peter
