Problem Mondeo
Handbrake on drum braked rear axle slightly sticky i believe this might be the shoe springs being \"shot\" and not pulling the shoes of the drums any ideas / reports before i rip it apart.

Shoe springs may be held back if the handbrake cable is partially siezed.be inclined to check out where the cable`s enter the rear backplate not sure about your motor but some
have a spring on the backplate which returns the brakes to normal.I could be wrong but doubt it is the springs between shoe`s.be inclined to look at handbrake cable assy in full.
let me know

another possibility may be dirt-n-dust on the barrels of the pistons that push the shoes out, which is preventing the springs from pulling them fully home again.

Had a similar problem on my Fiesta. Turned out to be a leak on one of the cylinders! The fluid was initially causing the friction material to stick to the drum giving a quiet bang when driving off after leaving the car for a while. It was only when i noticed a lack of braking effort from one side, when doing a hill start, that I dicovered the real problem.
Pull the inspection plug (if there is one) off the back of the drum and take a look.

I agree with linac eng, leaking wheel cylinder, broken springs tend to make the brakes grab rather than stick on, although a sticking handbrake cable is feasable, as water can get in the bottom end of the cable and corrode it if the rubber boot is damaged on the cable end.
