Hi
Have just sold a fairly pricey car (relatively speaking....) and am now on a budget as i'm moving into my own place, gotta meet mortgage payments on my own etc
So, previous car was a 2000 S3, prior to that another S3, before that a 1993 Golf Gti, before that LHD TT
Not sure what to get now for my 6 grand cash
Ideas so far are Ford Focus, should find an old one for around 6 grand, nice looking, seem nice to drive, quite reliable?
Old shape Golf VR6 (circa P reg) nice engine, but my last golf of this age was a nightmare. Bought for 3 grand, cost almost that much to keep it on the road in the first 12 months
Jeep Grand Cherokee. 4.0 version expensive to run, possibly in my price range for monthly costings, was surprised to see so many sub £6000 in Autotrader
So any thoughts/suggestions? Would love something fast and/or luxurious with leather/air con etc like the Jeep or a BMW/Audi to soften the blow of selling my beloved chipped S3
thanks!

Toyota Supra. Non turbo (you don't need it).
£6k should get you a nice one. Might even get you a targa top one which is even nicer.
Leather, auto, power everything.
Plus Toyota reliability.

Great, thanks for those suggestions, never thought of a supra or even toyota, always tended to buy german, but will start finding out about engines and options now, first glance suggests i might have to go slightly over budget, but may be worth it
Any thoughts on the Grand Cherokee 4.0 ?
Drove one years ago when it was new, i was very impressed with the spec. on the limited edition ones

Nick
The only significant repairs needed on my 12/96 Golf VR6, which I've had since new, was about two years ago when the side mirrors were replaced because the heating elements failed (or so the VW dealer assured me), and then a year ago when the rear bump stops and steering column shear bolt were replaced. Other than that, it's been simply fantastic faultless fun ever since new. I've seen similar comments from other owners. No, it's not for sale.

grand cherokee 4ltr= 15mpg.

If you've sold up because of moving out and given your motoring history I'd guess you're in your late 20s and need to think about running costs.
As Ben says, 15 mpg isn't great and unless you're doing very little mileage, a Supra will be very thirsty every day and if it does need parts, they'll be expensive.
Probably I'd think Focus as a safe but fairly dull choice, a Leon if you can still handle group 16 insurance, or maybe something a bit older and sportier like a Nissan 200SX. Oh and while they may be cheaper in other countries, TTs seem to start at about ?14k in Germany.

Garnd Cherokee I can't comment on.
But if you like the style of the Supra another even more in your face option is the Mitsubishi 3000GT.
HJ's car by car guide is very accurate on these.
They are real rip-snorters. 282bhp V6 twin turbos, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steer wild things, with leather and air con and electric everything. In this case you want the 6 speed manual and you will want to chuck it about.
£6k will get you a really nice one.

Thanks a lot for all the replies
I am in my mid twenties, and have really just wanted to get rid of the burden of a big finance deal, which is what I had with the S3
I'm happy to meet the running costs of something like a supra if i'm not forking out 400 quid a month on a car loan
The Supra is a car I'd never have thought of, and though I'm not sold on the styling, they're growing on me and I am looking to get a test drive today or tommorow
Hopefully it wont feel like a step backwards at all with a 3 litre monster like that
So...thanks !

Nick,
Are you sure you want a Jeep if you don't actually need a 4x4?
Any 4x4 (except the X5) is going to feel crude, soft, slow & unstable after your S3s. As a Discovery owner, (we use it to tow a horsebox, frequently off-road) I rather fail to understand why such vehicles are so popular with people who don't need the car to do any of the jobs for which it was designed.
As a driver's car I can unreservedly recommend the Subaru Impreza Turbo (our other car), but the spec is very basic so may not suit your needs.
What about a 328i Coupe?

These Supras seem a little hard to come by near to home, closest are a bit outside my budget as well
HJ,
Can you provide more info about that 180 TT if its still available?
You can reach me on - zen12940@zen.co.uk
Thanks

I can sell you a Vectra S plate V6 full history 90k very clean with tow bar and all electrics only £2700 Regards Peter

Hyundai Coupe? They look good, 2.0 ones are fairly quick although admittedly not exactly in Supra territory!
I haven't looked but i bet you could pick a 4-5 year old one for £6k
Or maybe something like the old style Mondeo ST24's?
Like others have said, lots and lots to choose from at that price, but you do need to factor in insurance if you're only in your mid-20's - i'm sure its been a bit of a hit for you before though, looking at your previous cars.
Enter a £6k limit on Autotrader, and maybe a keyword of "sport" "gti" or "turbo" to help weed out 'boring' cars.
