Squeaking Brakes on Ford Focus - Causes? - nickd01
What causes brakes to squeak? My Focus (7k miles) has slightly squeaky brakes and I\'d be keen to get rid of it before it gets worse. The front discs seem to have a little bit of rust on them but certainly no worse than my old Polo did and they never squeaked! What are the major causes?

Thanks

Worn brake pad can squeak, the manufactures do this to remind us that the pads are worn, but this is probally unlikely after 7k miles unless you are a demon braker.

Dust trapped in drum brakes can cause squeaking, not sure if the Focus are discs all round so this might not apply.

Rust is not a problem unless it is where the pads contact the disc, in which case normal use will remove this.

If all else fails then remove the pads and apply some copperslip between the pads and calipers.

My Focus brakes sqeak a bit for the first few miles of driving if it\'s a bit damp - Do yours do it constantly?

Because the pads are only an interface fit with the calipers/bracket, they are able to move like a reed in a musical instrument. Basically, they are juddering in their mountings but at a very high frequency (about 15,000 times a second and only a miniscule distance)

Coppaslip, anti squeal shims, or rubber anti-brake squeal coatings with damp this oscillation such that no noise is generated.

Accurate expanation. Year ago when I was in the trade we used to put a thin smear of Hylomar Blue jointing compound on the back of the pad. Let it dry and then pop the pad back in. Damps the vibrations quite effectively. VW/Audi sell their own compound, which looks quite similar to Hylomar.

I\'m only doing short <10 mile journies at the moment. Maybe they need a longer run to clean them up a bit?

Wife's car does the same unless I drive it hard and brake hard frequently to remove surface rust properly. It works..

Sooty.T is right.but don`t worry about the disc`s being rusty. It occurs all the time as they are exposed to weather more than drums. Some times the squeel is not curable depending on manufacturer of pads. But as yours is not far from new.would take it back to where you bought it to correct.I assume the mileage is from new?

The brakes on my Focus frequently squeal, although not too loudly. They sound like disk squeal, but in fact come from the rear drums. I think this used to be a common problem - perhaps it is now supposed to be cured on later cars.

If rears are making a noise. It\'s normally because the brake dust is getting trapped in between the brake shoe and brake drum. what happens is the dust from shoe gets trapped and while wheel is turning vibrates causing the same or similar from disc same difference really. something you may hear from buses as they pass you. what it needs is a clean out getting rid of all dust in the drums, correct me if wrong, but that is normally the case. let me know
